Description:   Neuronal Marker Doublecortin (DCX) is a microtubule-associated protein expressed almost exclusively in immature neurons. Neuronal precursors begin to express DCX shortly after exiting the cell cycle, and continue to express DCX for 2-3 weeks as the cells mature into neurons. Downregulation of DCX begins after 2 weeks, and occurs at the same time that these cells begin to express, a marker for mature neurons. Due to the nearly exclusive expression of DCX in developing neurons, this protein has been used increasingly as a marker for neurogenesis. Indeed, the levels of DCX expression increase in response to exercise, which occurs in parallel with increased BrdU labelling, currently a "gold standard" in measuring neurogenesis.

Description:   Emp is a 396 amino acid ubiquitously expressed adhesion protein. Expressed as 5 alternatively spliced isoforms, Emp contains one CTLH domain and one LisH domain. Emp can form a complex with F-actin, which is involved regulating actin distribution in erythroblasts and macrophages. Considered to assist with cell division and nuclear architecture, Emp is localized with condensed chromatin at prophase, nuclear spindle poles at metaphase and in the contractile ring during telophase and cytokinesis. Although the exact function of Emp is unknown, Emp is suggested to be involvement in erythroblast-macrophage cell attachment, terminal maturation and enucleation of erythroid cells, and inhibiting apoptosis of erythroblasts.

Description:   As a subfamily of the cadherin superfamily, protocadherins are cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins that contain up to seven extracellular domains and are predominantly expressed in the nervous system. Importantly, the adhesion mechanism of protocadherins is distinct from classic cadherins. Through inactivation or overexpression, several protocadherins have been implicated in a variety of cancers. PCDH7 (protocadherin 7), also known as BHPCDH or BH-Pcdh, is a 1069 amino acid single-pass I membrane protein that is expressed in the brain and heart. Containing seven cadherin domains, PCDH7 is thought to function in cell-cell recognition and adhesion. PCDH7 exists as three isoforms due to alternative splicing events.

Description:   Fused toes protein homolog (FTS), also known as AKT-interacting protein (AKTIP) and Ft1, is a 292 amino acid protein that localizes to the cytoplasm and the cell membrane. A member of the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family, FTS binds directly to AKT1 to regulate apoptosis in a cell population. AKT1 is a protein that plays a critical role in a number of cellular responses, such as cell growth, protein synthesis, and antiapoptotic signaling. The interaction of FTS and AKT1 enhances the phosphorylation and activation of AKT1, which, through an AKT1/GSK-3∫/NFATc1 signaling cascade, results in the increased production of the proapoptotic hormone Fas ligand and thus an increase in apoptosis.

Description:   This gene encodes a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain) family. Members of this family are membrane-anchored proteins structurally related to snake venom disintegrins, and have been implicated in a variety of biological processes involving cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, including fertilization, muscle development, and neurogenesis. The protein encoded by this gene interacts with SH3 domain-containing proteins, binds mitotic arrest deficient 2 beta protein, and is also involved in TPA-induced ectodomain shedding of membrane-anchored heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.

Description:   The Annexins constitute a family of structurally-related, relatively abundant proteins that exhibit Ca2+-dependent binding to phospholipids. Annexins function in multiple aspects of cell biology including regulation of membrane trafficking, transmembrane channel activity, inhibition of phospholipase A2, inhibition of coagulation and mediation of cell-matrix interactions. Annexin A13 is considered the original progenitor of the 12 members of vertebrate Annexins. The expression of Annexin A13 is highly tissue-specific, being expressed only in intestinal and kidney epithelial cells. This expression is associated with a highly differentiated intracellular transport function. Two alternative splicing isoforms of Annexin A13 exist, both of which bind to rafts.

Description:   Direct ligand for ERBB3 and ERBB4 tyrosine kinase receptors. Concomitantly recruits ERBB1 and ERBB2 coreceptors, resulting in ligand-stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation and activation of the ERBB receptors. The multiple isoforms perform diverse functions such as inducing growth and differentiation of epithelial, glial, neuronal, and skeletal muscle cells; inducing expression of acetylcholine receptor in synaptic vesicles during the formation of the neuromuscular junction; stimulating lobuloalveolar budding and milk production in the mammary gland and inducing differentiation of mammary tumor cells; stimulating Schwann cell proliferation; implication in the development of the myocardium such as trabeculation of the developing heart. Isoform 10 may play a role in motor and sensory neuron development.

Description:   Homeobox (HOX) genes, which share a highly conserved 183-bp sequence, encode proteins capable of binding to specific DNA sequences and functioning as transcription factors. During embryogenesis, HOX genes play a critical role in the spatial and temporal differentiation of cells. HoxC4, a sequence-specific transcription factor, belongs to the Antp HOX family and localizes to the nucleus. It functions as a part of a developmental regulatory system, providing cells with specific positional identities on the anterior-posterior axis. HoxC4 expression levels increase with differentiation of lymphoid cells, suggesting its role in the molecular regulation of hematopoiesis. HoxC4 is also expressed in differentiated keratinocytes.

Description:   KCNF1 is a multi-pass membrane-bound protein that acts as an ion channel and is generally expressed as a heterotetramer of potassium channeling proteins. Formerly known as kH1, KCNF1 is usually found as a heteromer with three other potassium channel proteins, KCNG3, KV6.3 and KCNV2. As a potassium channel protein, KCNF1 plays a role in regulating apoptosis and proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle (PASM) cells. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) restrict proliferation and can induce apoptosis in normal human PASM cells and will upregulate expression of KCNF1 in PASM cells in vitro. KCNF1 is expressed in heart, brain, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney and pancreas.

Description:   The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. This gene was identified as an oncogene, which confers transforming potential when transfected into mammalian cells. Targeted disruption of the homolog of this gene in mouse resulted in the phenotype of abnormally long hair, which suggested a function as an inhibitor of hair elongation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. [provided by RefSeq].

Description:   Receptor tyrosine kinase which binds promiscuously membrane-bound ephrin family ligands residing on adjacent cells, leading to contact-dependent bidirectional signaling into neighboring cells. The signaling pathway downstream of the receptor is referred to as forward signaling while the signaling pathway downstream of the ephrin ligand is referred to as reverse signaling. Highly promiscuous for ephrin-A ligands it binds preferentially EFNA5. Upon activation by EFNA5 regulates cell-cell adhesion, cytoskeletal organisation and cell migration. Plays a role in cardiac cells migration and differentiation and regulates the formation of the atrioventricular canal and septum during development probably through activation by EFNA1. Involved in the retinotectal mapping of neurons. May also control the segregation but not the guidance of motor and sensory axons during neuromuscular circuit development.
