Description:
Cystatin A and cystatin B (also designated PME, CST6, STFB, CPI-B, stefin B and liver thiol proteinase inhibitor) are thiol protease inhibitors that form complexes with papain and the cathepsins B, H, and L. Cystatin A, a cytoplasmic protein, is one of the precursor proteins of the cornified cell envelope in keratinocytes and plays a role in epidermal development and maintenance. Cystatin B protects against intracellular proteases leaking out of lysosomes and is primarily expressed in heart, liver and kidney.

Description:
Functions as a transcriptional activator in a promoter context-dependent manner. Modulates the placental expression of CYP11A1. Involved in regulation of the alpha-globin gene in erythroid cells. Activation of the alpha-globin promoter in erythroid cells is via synergistic interaction with TFCP2 (By similarity). Involved in regulation of the alpha-globin gene in erythroid cells. Binds strongly to sequences around the HIV-1 initiation site and weakly over the TATA-box. Represses HIV-1 transcription by inhibiting the binding of TFIID to the TATA-box.

Description:
This gene is a member of the UBA domain family, whose members include proteins having connections to ubiquitin and the ubiquitination pathway. The ubiquitin associated domain is thought to be a non-covalent ubiquitin binding domain consisting of a compact three helix bundle. This particular protein originates from a gene locus in a refined region on chromosome 9 undergoing loss of heterozygosity in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Taking into account its cytogenetic location, this UBA domain family member is being studied as a putative target for mutation in nasopharyngeal carcinomas. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Description:
UXT is a novel protein, highly conserved in mouse. It interacts with the N terminus of the androgen receptor and plays a role in facilitating receptor-induced transcriptional activation. It is abundantly expressed in tumor tissues and is likely to be involved in tumorigenesis.

Description:
NF-kappa-B is a pleiotropic transcription factor present in almost all cell types and is the endpoint of a series of signal transduction events that are initiated by a vast array of stimuli related to many biological processes such as inflammation, immunity, differentiation, cell growth, tumorigenesis and apoptosis. NF-kappa-B is a homo- or heterodimeric complex formed by the Rel-like domain-containing proteins RELA/p65, RELB, NFKB1/p105, NFKB1/p50, REL and NFKB2/p52 and the heterodimeric p65-p50 complex appears to be most abundant one. The dimers bind at kappa-B sites in the DNA of their target genes and the individual dimers have distinct preferences for different kappa-B sites that they can bind with distinguishable affinity and specificity. Different dimer combinations act as transcriptional activators or repressors, respectively. NF-kappa-B is controlled by various mechanisms of post-translational modification and subcellular compartmentalization as well as by interactions with other cofactors or corepressors. NF-kappa-B complexes are held in the cytoplasm in an inactive state complexed with members of the NF-kappa-B inhibitor (I-kappa-B) family. In a conventional activation pathway, I-kappa-B is phosphorylated by I-kappa-B kinases (IKKs) in response to different activators, subsequently degraded thus liberating the active NF-kappa-B complex which translocates to the nucleus. NF-kappa-B heterodimeric p65-p50 and p65-c-Rel complexes are transcriptional activators. The NF-kappa-B p65-p65 complex appears to be involved in invasin-mediated activation of IL-8 expression. The inhibitory effect of I-kappa-B upon NF-kappa-B the cytoplasm is exerted primarily through the interaction with p65. p65 shows a weak DNA-binding site which could contribute directly to DNA binding in the NF-kappa-B complex. Associates with chromatin at the NF-kappa-B promoter region via association with DDX1. Essential for cytokine gene expression in T-cells (PubMed:15790681).

Description:
NGL-1 is a single pass type I membrane protein that acts as a cell adhesion molecule. It contains nine leucine-rich repeats (LRR) and one Ig-like C2-type domain. NGL-1 is predominantly expressed in the striatum and the cerebral cortex of both the embryonic and adult brain. NGL-1 specifically interacts with Netrin G1 (a molecule involved in axon guidance in the developing central nervous system) via its LRR region. NGL-1 plays a role in the regulation of neurite outgrowth of developing thalamic neurons. Soluble NGL-1 inhibits thalamic axon outgrowth while NGL-1 that is bound to the surface of developing thalamocortical axons stimulates growth. NGL-1 also interacts with Whirlin possibly stablizing interstereociliar links.

Description:
NF-kappa-B is a ubiquitous transcription factor involved in several biological processes. It is held in the cytoplasm in an inactive state by specific inhibitors. Upon degradation of the inhibitor, NF-kappa-B moves to the nucleus and activates transcription of specific genes. NF-kappa-B is composed of NFKB1 or NFKB2 bound to either REL, RELA, or RELB. The most abundant form of NF-kappa-B is NFKB1 complexed with the product of this gene, RELA. Four transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
