Glycérol
Glycerol is a simple polyol compound which is a viscous liquid that is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations. It has three hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its solubility in water and its hygroscopic nature.
It is a trihydroxy sugar alcohol that is an intermediate in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. It is used as a solvent, emollient, pharmaceutical agent, sweetening agent and is of low toxicity.
Glycerol is used in the concentration and storage of enzymes. Also prevents back-diffusion and protein samples into the buffer. It is an osmotic agent with lubricating and moisturizing properties and has a long list of applications. It is also used to aid in casting gradient gels and as a protein stabilizer and storage buffer component.
Soluble in aqueous solution (1 mg/ml-clear, colorless solution).
