Description:
The membrane-bound isoform 1 is a receptor involved in the development of the cardiovascular system, in angiogenesis, in the formation of certain neuronal circuits and in organogenesis outside the nervous system. It mediates the chemorepulsant activity of semaphorins. It binds to semaphorin 3A, The PLGF-2 isoform of PGF, The VEGF-165 isoform of VEGF and VEGF-B. Coexpression with KDR results in increased VEGF-165 binding to KDR as well as increased chemotaxis. It may regulate VEGF-induced angiogenesis. The soluble isoform 2 binds VEGF-165 and appears to inhibit its binding to cells. It may also induce apoptosis by sequestering VEGF-165. May bind as well various members of the semaphorin family. Its expression has an averse effect on blood vessel number and integrity.

Description:
C9 is a plasma protein synthesized in the liver and monocytes consisting of a single polypeptide chain. C9 is a part of the membrane attack complex (MAC), an important component of the immune system. The MAC forms upon complement system activation by invading pathogenic bacteria and consists of the four major complement proteins: C5b, C6, C7 and C8. These complement proteins bind to the outer surface of the plasma membrane of the invading cell. C9 binds to the membrane associated C5b-8 protein, which leads to the circular polymerization of 12-18 C9 molecules. These polymerized C9 molecules form a ring structure in the membrane. Molecules can then diffuse freely through this transmembrane channel, causing cell lysis and destruction of the invading bacterial cell.

Description:
The leucine-rich (LRR) repeat is a 20-30 amino acid motif that forms a hydrophobic å/∫ horseshoe fold, allowing it to accommodate several leucine residues within a tightly packed core. All LRR repeats contain a variable segment and a highly conserved segment, the latter of which accounts for 11 or 12 residues of the entire LRR motif. The LRRTM protein family plays a role in the regulation of various cellular events during nervous system development. Localizing predominantly to the nervous system, LRRTM family members are known to exhibit synaptogenic activity. LRRTM4 (leucine-rich repeat transmembrane neuronal protein 4) is a 590 amino acid member of the LRRTM protein family. Expressed in neuronal tissues, LRRTM4 may play a role in the development and maintenance of the vertebrate nervous system. A single-pass type I membrane protein, LRRTM4 contains 10 LRR repeats. LRRTM4 is expressed as two isoforms produced by alternative splicing.

Description:
Comparative evaluation of the expression patterns of the human and mouse genes, combined with previous biochemical and yeast genetic studies, indicate that the Exo1 (Exonuclease I) proteins are important contributors to chromosome processing during mammalian DNA repair and recombination. In mice, the Exo1 gene maps to distal chromosome 1, consistent with the recent mapping of the orthologous human HEX1/EXO1 gene to chromosome 1q43. Exo1 is expressed prominently in testis, an area of active homologous recombination, and spleen, a prominent lymphoid tissue. In both mammalian and yeast systems, Exo1 is a 5'-3' double stranded DNA exonuclease that has previously been implicated in DNA mismatch repair (MMR). The MMR system ensures genome integrity by removing mispaired and unpaired bases that originate during replication. In humans, Exo1 interacts with MSH2 and MLH1 and has been proposed to be a redundant exonuclease in MMR. In both mammalian and yeast systems, Exo1 plays a structural role in MMR and stabilizes multiprotein complexes containing a number of MMR proteins.

Description:
NKHC1 is a neuronal-specific component of a multi-subunit “molecular motor†complex that mediates intracellular organelle transport. Mutations in the gene encoding NKHC1 cause autosomal dominant spastic paraplegia 10. NKHC1 has a pan-neuronal distribution in the nervous system. Rat tissue extracts by immunoblot of NKHC1 can produce a doublet only in brain and sciatic nerve tissue. NKHC1 is distributed throughout the central nervous system and is enriched in subsets of neurons. Within cultured hippocampal neurons, NKHC1 is concentrated in the perinuclear region of the cell body. Kinesin superfamily proteins like NKHC1 are the molecular motors conveying cargos along microtubules.
