Fused toes protein homolog (FTS), also known as AKT-interacting protein (AKTIP) and Ft1, is a 292 amino acid protein that localizes to the cytoplasm and the cell membrane. A member of the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family, FTS binds directly to AKT1 to regulate apoptosis in a cell population. AKT1 is a protein that plays a critical role in a number of cellular responses, such as cell growth, protein synthesis, and antiapoptotic signaling. The interaction of FTS and AKT1 enhances the phosphorylation and activation of AKT1, which, through an AKT1/GSK-3∫/NFATc1 signaling cascade, results in the increased production of the proapoptotic hormone Fas ligand and thus an increase in apoptosis.

During embryogenesis, HOX genes play a critical role in the spatial and temporal differentiation of cells. HoxC4, a sequence-specific transcription factor, belongs to the Antp HOX family and localizes to the nucleus. It functions as a part of a developmental regulatory system, providing cells with specific positional identities on the anterior-posterior axis. HoxC4 expression levels increase with differentiation of lymphoid cells, suggesting its role in the molecular regulation of hematopoiesis. HoxC4 is also expressed in differentiated keratinocytes.

KCNF1 is a multi-pass membrane-bound protein that acts as an ion channel and is generally expressed as a heterotetramer of potassium channeling proteins. Formerly known as kH1, KCNF1 is usually found as a heteromer with three other potassium channel proteins, KCNG3, KV6.3 and KCNV2. As a potassium channel protein, KCNF1 plays a role in regulating apoptosis and proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle (PASM) cells. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) restrict proliferation and can induce apoptosis in normal human PASM cells and will upregulate expression of KCNF1 in PASM cells in vitro. KCNF1 is expressed in heart, brain, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney and pancreas.
