Protocadherins are a large family of cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins that are involved in the establishment and maintenance of neuronal connections in the brain. There are three protocadherin gene clusters, designated alpha, beta and gamma, all of which contain multiple tandemly arranged genes. PCDH17 is a 1,159 amino acid single-pass type I membrane protein that contains six cadherin domains. Expressed as multiple alternatively spliced isoforms, PCDH17 is thought to function as a calcium-dependent cell adhesion protein that may play a role in establishing cell-cell connections within brain tissue. The gene encoding PCDH17 maps to human chromosome 13, which houses over 400 genes, such as BRCA2 and RB1, and comprises nearly 4% of the human genome.

Glycolytic enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a phosphoryl group from phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to ADP, generating ATP. Stimulates POU5F1-mediated transcriptional activation. The ratio betwween the highly active tetrameric form and nearly inactive dimeric form determines whether glucose carbons are channeled to biosynthetic processes or used for glycolytic ATP production. The PDE4A8 is a testis germ cell-specific PDE4A variant. There are two PDE4A variants identified in rat testis (PDE4A8 and an un-characterized 76 kDa PDE4A protein). Spermatogenesis is accompanied by expression of a varied repertoire of PDE4 enzymes at different stages of cell differentiation that presumably perform specialized functions. Confocal microscopic examination revealed the presence of PDE4A8 in primary and secondary spermatids but not in mature spermatozoa. PDE4A8 inhibition results in increased apoptosis of the germ cells accompanied with reduction in the number of mature spermatozoa.

The highly leukemogenic avian retrovirus E26 contains two oncogenes, v-Myb and v-Ets, which are expressed together as a fusion protein. The cellular homolog of v-Myb, designated c-Myb, encodes a transcription factor. Deletion or disruption of a negative regulatory domain mapping within the carboxy-terminal domain of c-Myb results in enhanced transactivating capacity and in parallel, leads to activation of its ability to transform hemopoietic cells. c-Myb is expressed preferentially, but not exclusively, in immature hemopoietic cells and its expression decreases as cells differentiate.
