This gene encodes a member of the ribosomal S6 kinase family of serine/threonine kinases. The encoded protein responds to mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) signaling to promote protein synthesis, cell growth, and cell proliferation. Activity of this gene has been associated with human cancer. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed. The use of alternative translation start sites results in isoforms with longer or shorter N-termini which may differ in their subcellular localizations. The galanin family of proteins are key members for inflammatory processes and cell proliferation, and may function as potential biomarkers for colon cancer. Produced in both neuronal and nonneuronal cells in the skin, members of the galanin family include galanin, galanin-message associated peptide, galanin-like peptide and alarin. GALP, also known as galanin-like peptide, is a 116 amino acid secreted protein belonging to the galanin family. Mainly produced in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC) and the posterior pituitary, GALP is thought to function in CNS homeostatic processes, including the regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion. GALP binds to the G-protein coupled galanin receptors, including GALR1, GALR2 and GALR3, and may also play a role in energy metabolism, with significant implications towards obesity. GALP exits as two alternatively spliced isoforms.

Slc9a9 (Sodium/hydrogen exchanger 9) or NHE9 may act in electroneutral exchange of protons for Na(+) across membranes. Four isoforms of the Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE6-NHE9) are distributed to intracellular compartments in human cells. They are localized to Golgi and post-Golgi endocytic compartments as follows: mid- to trans-Golgi, NHE8; trans-Golgi network, NHE7; early recycling endosomes, NHE6; and late recycling endosomes, NHE9. The intracellular localization of the NHEs is established by the balance of transport in and out of the post-Golgi compartments as the dynamic membrane trafficking. Their in vivo function is to regulate the pH and monovalent cation concentration in these organelles.

This gene is an ortholog of the Drosophila fat gene, which encodes a tumor suppressor essential for controlling cell proliferation during Drosophila development. The gene product is a member of the cadherin superfamily, a group of integral membrane proteins characterized by the presence of cadherin-type repeats. In addition to containing 34 tandem cadherin-type repeats, the gene product has five epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats and one laminin A-G domain. This gene is expressed at high levels in a number of fetal epithelia. Its product probably functions as an adhesion molecule and/or signaling receptor, and is likely to be important in developmental processes and cell communication. Myotubularin and the myotubularin-related proteins (MTMR1-9) belong to a highly conserved family of eukaryotic phosphatases. They are protein tyrosine phosphatases that utilize inositol phospholipids, rather than phosphoproteins, as substrates. MTMR family members hydrolyze both Phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PtdIns3P) and PtdIns(3,5)P2. MTMR2 interacts with MTMR5, an inactive family member that increases the enzymatic activity of MTMR2 and dictates its subcellular localization. Mutations in MTMR2 cause autosomal recessive Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 4B1 (CMT4B1), which is characterized by reduced nerve conduction velocities, focally folded myelin sheaths and demyelination. MTMR3 and MTMR4 can either interact with each other or self associate. MTMR6 regulates the activity of the calcium-activated potassium channel 3.1. MTMR9 regulates the activity of MTMR7 and MTMR8.

ELAC2 is a zinc phosphodiesterase which displays some tRNA 3' processing endonuclease activity. It is thought to be involved in tRNA maturation, acting by removing a 3' trailer from precursor tRNA. ELAC2 also interacts with activated Smad family member 2 (Smad2) and its nuclear partner forkhead box H1 (also known as FAST-1), and reduced expression can suppress transforming growth factor-beta induced growth arrest. Mutations in this gene result in an increased risk of prostate cancer. A number of allelic variants have been investigated in hereditary prostate cancer.

The genus Salmonella is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus is composed of Gram-negative bacilli that are facultative and flagellated (motile). Salmonellae possess 3 major antigens; the "H" or flagellar antigen (phase 1 & 2), the "O" or somatic antigen (part of the LPS moiety) and the "Vi" or capsular antigen (referred to as "K" in other Enterobacteriaceae). Salmonellae also possess the LPS endotoxin characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria. This LPS is composed of an "O" polysaccharide ("O" antigen) an "R" core and the endotoxic inner "Lipid A". Endotoxins evoke fever and can activate complement, kinin and clotting factors. Until recently the most common cause of food poisoning by Salmonella species was due to S. Typhimurium. As its name suggests, it causes a typhoid-like disease in mice. In humans S. Typhimurium does not cause as severe disease as S. Typhi, and is not normally fatal. The disease is characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and nausea, and generally lasts up to 7 days.

It is a single pass transmembrane protein with a highly conserved cytoplasmic region that is slightly longer than that of other family members. The genes encoding IL-1R9 and IL-1R8 are both found on the X-chromosome in the region associated with X-linked non-syndromic mental retardation. The B subunit of cholera toxin (CtxB) binds to a GM1-ganglioside receptor, a ubiquitous glycolipid cell surface receptor. This binding is widely accepted to initiate toxin action by triggering uptake and delivery of the toxin A subunit into cells. The beta chain has no toxic activity by itself. The holotoxin consists of a pentameric ring of B subunits whose central pore is occupied by the A subunit. The A subunit contains two chains, A1 and A2, linked by a disulfide bridge. The A subunit (and Cholera toxin) activates the adenylate cyclase enzyme in cells of the intestinal mucosa leading to increased levels of intracellular cAMP.

The MAGUK family is divided into four subfamilies: DLG-like, ZO1-like, p55-like and LIN2-like. MPP7 (MAGUK p55 subfamily member 7), also known as palmitoylated membrane protein 7, is a 576 amino acid protein that belongs to the MAGUK family and assists in the assembly of protein complexes. A peripheral membrane protein that exists as a heterodimer, MPP7 enhances tight junction formation and epithelial cell polarity. MPP7 contains one SH3 domain, a guanylate kinase-like domain, two L27 domains and a single PDZ (DHR) domain. The gene encoding MPP7 maps to human chromosome 10p11.23
