Ephrin B proteins are thought to play key roles in cellular functions as diverse as neuronal migration and blood vessel development. Ephrin B molecules expressed at the membrane surface bind to the Ephrin B family receptors on target cells during cell to cell contact. This interaction leads to cell signaling in the target cell but also generates a reverse signal in the cell expressing Ephrin B on its surface. This reverse signaling event is thought to be critical for vessel maturation and neuronal development. Importantly, tyrosine phosphorylation of Ephrin B is thought to be a critical component of this reverse signaling event. Recent work demonstrated that Tyr331 of Ephrin B was phosphorylated in HEK293 cells after stimulation by the soluble Ephrin B2 receptor tyrosine kinase.

CCDC37 is a 611 amino acid protein that exists as two alternatively spliced isoforms. The gene encoding CCDC37 maps to human chromosome 3, which is made up of about 214 million bases encoding over 1,100 genes. Notably, there is a chemokine receptor gene cluster and a variety of human cancer related loci on chromosome 3. Particular regions of the chromosome 3 short arm are deleted in many types of cancer cells. Key tumor suppressing genes on chromosome 3 encode apoptosis mediator RASSF1, cell migration regulator HYAL1 and angiogenesis suppressor SEMA3B. Marfan Syndrome, porphyria, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease are a few of the numerous genetic diseases associated with chromosome 3.

CCDC125, also known as KENAE, is a 511 amino acid protein expressed as two isoforms produced by alternative splicing and encoded by a gene mapping to human chromosome 5. With 181 million base pairs encoding around 1,000 genes, chromosome 5 is about 6% of human genomic DNA. It is associated with Cockayne syndrome through the ERCC8 gene and familial adenomatous polyposis through the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor suppressor gene. Treacher Collins syndrome is also chromosome 5 associated and is caused by insertions or deletions within the TCOF1 gene. Deletion of the p arm of chromosome 5 leads to Cri du chat syndrome. Deletion of 5q or chromosome 5 altogether is common in therapy-related acute myelogenous leukemias and myelodysplastic syndrome.
