Glutamate receptors mediate most excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and play an important role in neural plasticity, neural development and neurodegeneration. Ionotropic glutamate receptors are categorized into NMDA receptors and kainate/AMPA receptors, both of which contain glutamate-gated, cation-specific ion channels. Kainate/AMPA receptors are co-localized with NMDA receptors in many synapses and consist of the structurally related subunits GluR-1 to -7, KA1 and KA2. KA1 (also designated EEA1) and KA2 (also designated EEA2) form heteromeric receptors with GluR subunits when coexpressed, forming ion channels with various properties. The kainate/AMPA receptors are primarily responsible for the fast excitatory neuro-transmission by glutamate.

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are a class of ionotropic glutamate receptors. NMDA receptor channel has been shown to be involved in long-term potentiation, an activity-dependent increase in the efficiency of synaptic transmission thought to underlie certain kinds of memory and learning. NMDA receptor channels are heteromers composed of three different subunits: NR1 (GRIN1), NR2 (GRIN2A, GRIN2B, GRIN2C, or GRIN2D) and NR3 (GRIN3A or GRIN3B). C9 is a plasma protein synthesized in the liver and monocytes consisting of a single polypeptide chain. C9 is a part of the membrane attack complex (MAC), an important component of the immune system. The MAC forms upon complement system activation by invading pathogenic bacteria and consists of the four major complement proteins: C5b, C6, C7 and C8. These complement proteins bind to the outer surface of the plasma membrane of the invading cell. C9 binds to the membrane associated C5b-8 protein, which leads to the circular polymerization of 12-18 C9 molecules. These polymerized C9 molecules form a ring structure in the membrane. Molecules can then diffuse freely through this transmembrane channel, causing cell lysis and destruction of the invading bacterial cell.

G protein-coupled receptor that is activated by a major product of dietary fiber digestion, the short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and that plays a role in the regulation of whole-body energy homeostasis and in intestinal immunity. In omnivorous mammals, the short chain fatty acids acetate, propionate and butyrate are produced primarily by the gut microbiome that metabolizes dietary fibers. SCFAs serve as a source of energy but also act as signaling molecules. That G protein-coupled receptor is probably coupled to the pertussis toxin-sensitive, G(i/o)-alpha family of G proteins but also to the Gq family (PubMed:12496283, PubMed:12711604, PubMed:23589301). Its activation results in the formation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, the mobilization of intracellular calcium, the phosphorylation of the MAPK3/ERK1 and MAPK1/ERK2 kinases and the inhibition of intracellular cAMP accumulation. May play a role in glucose homeostasis by regulating the secretion of GLP-1, in response to short-chain fatty acids accumulating in the intestine. May also regulate the production of LEP/Leptin, a hormone acting on the central nervous system to inhibit food intake. Finally, may also regulate whole-body energy homeostasis through adipogenesis regulating both differentiation and lipid storage of adipocytes. In parallel to its role in energy homeostasis, may also mediate the activation of the inflammatory and immune responses by SCFA in the intestine, regulating the rapid production of chemokines and cytokines. May also play a role in the resolution of the inflammatory response and control chemotaxis in neutrophils. MAGEF1 is a member of the MAGE (melanoma antigen gene) superfamily.Most known members of the MAGE superfamily are expressed in tumors, testis and fetal tissues, which has been described as a cancer/testis or "CT" expression pattern. MAGEF1, however, is expressed in all adult and fetal tissues tested, as well as in many tumor types including ovarian, breast, cervical, melanoma and leukemia. The coding region of MAGE-F1 is contained within a single exon and includes a microsatellite repeat. Several MAGE genes are ubiquitously expressed suggesting a role for MAGE encoded proteins in normal cell physiology.

Glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor attachment 1 protein (GPAA1), also designated GPI anchor attachment protein 1 or GAA1 protein homolog, is a membrane protein localized to the endoplasmic reticulum which is involved in GPI-anchor biosynthesis. GPAA1 is crucial for GPI-anchoring of precursor proteins and catalyzes the attachment of GPI to proteins containing a C-terminal GPR attachment signal. GAA1 contains an N-terminal signal sequence, one cAMP- and cGMP-dependent protein kinase phosphorylation site, two potential N-glycosylation sites, one leucine zipper pattern and eight putative transmembrane domains. Neuroglycan C is a brain-specific chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (CSPG) implicated in the proliferation of neural stem and progenitor cells. Neuro-glycan C is a single-pass membrane protein that can manifest as a part-time proteoglycan depending on the tissue expressing it. In its proteoglycan form, Neuroglycan C exhibits chondroitin sulfate glycans and functions as a receptor for midkine, a growth factor that binds heparin, to affect cytoskeletal changes. By means of ectodomain shedding, the ectodomain of Neuroglycan C is able to enhance neurite outgrowth from neurons. Neurite growth stimulation is affected by both an EGF-like and an acidic amino acid domain found on the shed ectodomain. Both domains instigate neurite growth, however, these domains exhibit differing functionality as to number of neurites produced and neuron types stimulated.
