Description:   DDX23 encodes a member of the DEAD box protein family. DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are putative RNA helicases. They are implicated in a number of cellular processes involving alteration of RNA secondary structure, such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. Based on their distribution patterns, some members of this family are believed to be involved in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. The protein encoded by this gene is a component of the U5 snRNP complex; it may facilitate conformational changes in the spliceosome during nuclear pre-mRNA splicing. An alternatively spliced transcript variant has been found for this gene, but its biological validity has not been determined.

Description:   UBE20, also known as E2-230K, is a 1,292 amino acid member of the uniquitin-conjugating enzyme family that is involved in protein modification. Expressed predominately in heart and skeletal muscle, UBE2O functions to catalyze the ATP-dependent covalent attachment of ubiquitin to select proteins, thereby targeting the ubiquitinated proteins for proteasomal degradation. The gene encoding UBE2O maps to human chromosome 17, which comprises over 2.5% of the human genome and encodes over 1,200 genes. Two key tumor suppressor genes are associated with chromosome 17, namely, p53 and BRCA1. Tumor suppressor p53 is necessary for maintenance of cellular genetic integrity by moderating cell fate through DNA repair versus cell death. Malfunction or loss of p53 expression is associated with malignant cell growth and Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Like p53, BRCA1 is directly involved in DNA repair, though specifically it is recognized as a genetic determinant of early onset breast cancer and predisposition to cancers of the ovary, colon, prostate gland and fallopian tubes.

Description:   Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein that is hormonally regulated. This protein is localized exclusively to the surface of lipid droplets. In response to lypotic stimuli, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A. Once activated, perilipin has inhibitory affects upon hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), a protein that mediates the hydrolysis of triacylglycerol, the major form of stored energy in the body. Perilipin expression is limited to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. There are currently two known isoforms, Perilipin A and B. Description:   Iron metabolism is essential for sustaining mammalian homeostasis. Iron uptake and distribution is a highly regulated process in mammalian cells that is monitored by two iron sensing proteins; iron regulatory protein-1 and -2 (IRP-1 and -2), also known as iron responsive element-binding protein-1 and -2 (IREBP-1 and -2) or aconitase 1 and 2. IRP-1 and IRP-2 are important soluble regulatory factors that mediate iron uptake and storage in mammalian cells. They are capable of either repressing translation or enhancing mRNA stability by associating with stem-loop motifs known as iron-responsive elements (IREs). IRPs respond to stress mediators, iron concentration and signaling factors, including nitrogen monoxide, cytokines and hydrogen peroxide.
