Description:   The attachment of enveloped viruses to cells and the fusion of viral and cellular membranes are critical early events in the HIV viral infection. This process is mediated by envelope glycoproteins (gp) on the surface of the virus. The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein, gp160, is proteolytically cleaved into gp120 and gp41, which remain noncovalently associated with one another. gp120 is one of the proteins that forms the envelope of HIV. gp120 projects from the surface of HIV and binds to the CD4 molecule on helper T cells. gp120 has been a logical experimental HIV vaccine because the outer envelope is the first part of the virus that encounters antibody. gp41 is embedded in the outer envelope of HIV that anchors gp120. gp41 also plays a key role in HIV's infection of CD4+ T cells by facilitating the fusion of the viral and cell membranes. Description:   The UDP-Glucuronosyltransferases (UGT) comprise a family of enzymes that detoxify and enhance the urinary excretion of a wide variety of xenobiotic and endogenous substrates by transferring glucuronic acid to sulfhydryl, hydroxyl, aromatic amino, or carboxylic acid groups. They have been subdivided into two families, UGT1 and UGT2, based on the evolutionary divergence of their genes. The enzymes of the UGT1A family play an important role in the metabolism of dietary constituents, phenols, and therapeutic drugs, and also the glucuronidation of bilirubin and iodothyronines. The enzymes of the UGT2B family are involved in the metabolism of bile acids, phenol derivatives, catecholestrogens and steroids. Description:   BEGAIN is a 593 amino acid protein that localizes to cytoplasm and membrane. BEGAIN interacts with PSD-95 and SAPAP1 and forms a ternary complex and may sustain the structure of the postsynaptic density (PSD). BEGAIN is a novel PSD component associated with the core complex of PSD-95 and SAPAP. Because BEGAIN and SAPAP interact with the same region of PSD-95, BEGAIN and SAPAP may compete for the binding to PSD-95 and cannot interact with PSD-95 simultaneously. The C-terminal region of BEGAIN is involved in the interaction with PSD-95 whereas the N-terminal region has a coiled-coil structure that may interact with other molecules. BEGAIN is specifically expressed in brain and enriched in the PSD fraction. BEGAIN is also expressed in neurons and enriched at synaptic junctions, and is likely involved in the organization of synaptic junction components.
