Functions in the early steps of protein synthesis by forming a ternary complex with GTP and initiator tRNA. This complex binds to a 4S ribosomal subunit, followed by mRNA binding to form a 43S preinitiation complex. Junction of the 6S ribosomal subunit to form the 8S initiation complex is preceded by hydrolysis of the GTP bound to eIF-2 and release of an eIF-2-GDP binary complex. In order for eIF-2 to recycle and catalyze another round of initiation, the GDP bound to eIF-2 must exchange with GTP by way of a reaction catalyzed by eIF-2B.

This protein belongs to a family of Zn-containing metallocarboxypeptidases specific to C-terminal lysine and arginine residues. It circulates in plasma as a zymogen with molecular weight of 55 kDa (401 amino acid residues; pI 5.0). Being activated by thrombin-thrombomodulin complex during blood coagulation, it exerts carboxypeptidase activity. Activated carboxypeptidase B2 removes C-terminal lysine residues from fibrin, which is necessary for plasminogen binding to fibrin. This prevents plasminogen from activation into plasmin and retards the lysis of a fibrin clot. The concentration in plasma of healthy people is 5-10 ug/ml. High plasma levels were found in patients with stable angina pectoris and angiographically verified coronary artery disease. Elevated concentration in blood is considered as a risk factor for venous thrombosis. A deficiency might contribute to the severity of bleeding disorders in hemophilias A and B, and decreased levels are found in chronic liver disease.

The genus Salmonella is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus is composed of Gram-negative bacilli that are facultative and flagellated (motile). Salmonellae possess 3 major antigens; the "H" or flagellar antigen (phase 1 & 2), the "O" or somatic antigen (part of the LPS moiety) and the "Vi" or capsular antigen (referred to as "K" in other Enterobacteriaceae). Salmonellae also possess the LPS endotoxin characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria. This LPS is composed of an "O" polysaccharide ("O" antigen) an "R" core and the endotoxic inner "Lipid A". Endotoxins evoke fever and can activate complement, kinin and clotting factors. Until recently the most common cause of food poisoning by Salmonella species was due to S. Typhimurium. As its name suggests, it causes a typhoid-like disease in mice. In humans S. Typhimurium does not cause as severe disease as S. Typhi, and is not normally fatal. The disease is characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and nausea, and generally lasts up to 7 days.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) are a protein family of transmembrane receptors that transmit an extracellular signal (ligand binding) into an intracellular signal (G protein activation). GPR signaling is an evolutionarily ancient mechanism used by all eukaryotes to sense environmental stimuli and mediate cell-cell communication. All of the receptors have seven membrane-spanning domains and the extracellular parts of the receptor can be glycosylated. These extracellular loops also contain two highly conserved cysteine residues which create disulfide bonds to stabilize the receptor structure. GPR105, also designated P2Y14, is widely expressed throughout many brain regions where it localizes to glial cells, and specifically co-localizes with astrocytes. GPR105 is upregulated when a tissue is immunologically challenged with lipopolysaccharide, leading to the theory that GPR105 may play an important role in modulating peripheral and neuroimmune function.

The Six proteins (sine oculis) are a family of homeodomain transcription factors that share a conserved DNA binding domain. Six3 is required for the specification and proliferation of the eye field in vertebrates and may be involved in some developmental disorders of the brain. Expression of Six3 is detected in human embryos as early as five to seven weeks of gestation, and is maintained in the eye throughout the entire period of fetal development. At 20 weeks of gestation, expression of Six3 in the human retina has been observed in ganglion cells and in cells of the inner nuclear layer. Six3 maps to human chromosome 2p16-p21, between genetic markers D2S119 and D2S288. The map position of human Six3 overlaps the positions of two dominant disorders (holoprosencephaly type 2 and Malattia leventinese) with ocular phenotypes that have been assigned to this chromosomal region.
