Description:
This gene encodes a member of the ALEX family of proteins which may play a role in tumor suppression. The encoded protein contains a potential N-terminal transmembrane domain and a single Armadillo (arm) repeat. Other proteins containing the arm repeat are involved in development, maintenance of tissue integrity, and tumorigenesis. This gene is closely localized with other family members on the X chromosome. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

Description:
Members of the TNF superfamily regulate immune responses and induce apoptosis. Two members of this family were identified and designated BAFF and April, respectively. Three receptors for BAFF were identified; these include: BCMA (B-cell maturation protein), TACI, and BAFF-R. BCMA, like TACI, binds BAFF and April. BAFF and its receptors induce B-Cell development and survival, activate NF-κB and c-jun N-terminal kinase, and are involved in B-Cell associated autoimmune diseases.

Cellular uptake of iron occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligand-occupied transferrin receptor into specialized endosomes. Endosomal acidification leads to iron release. The apotransferrin-receptor complex is then recycled to the cell surface with a return to neutral pH and the concomitant loss of affinity of apotransferrin for its receptor. Transferrin receptor is necessary for development of erythrocytes and the nervous system (By similarity). A second ligand, the heditary hemochromatosis protein HFE, competes for binding with transferrin for an overlapping C-terminal binding site.
