Description:   AFM is a member of the albumin gene family, which is comprised of four genes that localise to chromosome 4 in a tandem arrangement. These four genes encode structurally-related serum transport proteins that are known to be evolutionarily related. The protein encoded by this gene is regulated developmentally, expressed in the liver and secreted into the bloodstream.

Description:   cAMP is a signaling molecule important for a variety of cellular functions. cAMP exerts its effects by activating the cAMP dependent protein kinase (AMPK), which transduces the signal through phosphorylation of different target proteins. The inactive holoenzyme of AMPK is a tetramer composed of two regulatory and two catalytic subunits. cAMP causes the dissociation of the inactive holoenzyme into a dimer of regulatory subunits bound to four cAMP and two free monomeric catalytic subunits. Four different regulatory subunits and three catalytic subunits of AMPK have been identified in humans. PKA beta (catalytic subunit) is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family and is a catalytic subunit of AMPK.

Description:   Reg protein is stimulated during the regeneration of pancreatic islets. In human, there are four REG family genes; REG 1 alpha, REG 1 beta, REG-related sequence (RS) and HIP/PAP. These Reg-related proteins are classified into four subfamilies according to their amino-acid sequences, but they share a similar structure and physiological function.

Description:   Leupaxin is a 386 amino acid cytoplasmic protein and member of the paxillin family. Leupaxin is highly expressed in lymphoid tissues such as spleen, lymph node, thymus and appendix, with low expression in bone marrow and fetal liver. Consisting of four leucine-rich LD-motifs at the N-terminus and four LIM domains at the C-terminus, leupaxin associates with a member of the focal adhesion kinase family, PYK2, in lymphoid cells. The leupaxin and PYK2 complex is involved in cell type-specific signaling in which it regulates signaling at sites of adhesion. Leupaxin is a substrate for tyrosine kinase in lymphoid cells and is suggested to participate in and be regulated by tyrosine kinase activity. Leupaxin may be a potential progression marker for a subset of prostate cancer and may act as a novel coactivator of the androgen receptor.

Description:   CatSpers (cation channel, sperm associated proteins) are ion transport proteins located on the surface of sperm cells in the principal piece of the sperm tail. CatSpers are vital to sperm motility, fertilization and cAMP-mediated calcium influx in sperm. There are four CatSper proteins in mammalian sperm, namely CatSper (or CatSper1), CatSper2, CatSper3 and CatSper4. CatSper proteins contain a single, six-transmembrane-spanning segment and exhibit the voltage-dependent Ca2+ channel four-repeat structure. CatSper proteins are believed to assemble into a heterotetrameric complex, forming an alkalinization-activated Ca2+-selective channel. Mutations in any of the genes encoding CatSper family proteins can result in male infertility. CatSper3 plays an important role in the hyperactivated motility of sperm cells, a process that is required in the preparation of sperm for fertilization.

Description:   In eukaryotes, the phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues is an essential means of regulating a broad range of cellular functions, including division, homeostasis and apoptosis. A group of proteins that are intimately involved in this process are the protein phosphatases. In general, the protein phosphatase (PP) holoenzyme is a trimeric complex composed of a regulatory subunit, a variable subunit and a catalytic subunit. Four major families of protein phosphatase catalytic subunits have been identified, designated PP1, PP2A, PP2B (calcineurin) and PP2C. An additional protein phosphatase catalytic subunit, PPX (also known as PP4) is a putative member of a novel PP family. The PP2A family comprises subfamily members PP2Aå and PP2A. The PP2A catalytic subunit associates with a variety of regulatory subunits. The B family of regulatory subunits (including B55, B56 and PR72/130 subfamilies) is believed to participate in substrate specificity and catalytic activity. PP2A-B55, also known as PP2A regulatory subunit subfamily B55 or PP2A-B1, is a B subfamily consisting of four B55 isoforms (Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta) encoded by four distinct genes.
