Description:   In eukaryotic cells, selective breakdown of cellular proteins is ensured by two distinct pathways, ubiquitination and degradation by the 26S proteasome. At specific stages of development, embryo- and tissue-specific components of the 26S proteasome are formed by developmentally regulated alternative splicing, including Rpn10a through Rpn10e (also designated pUb-R2 through pUb-R5). The pUb-R2 subunit, originally identified as S5a, is ubiquitously expressed and may perform proteolysis constitutively in a wide variety of cells. p44S10 is a highly conserved proteasome regulatory subunit that is expressed in heart, liver, skeletal muscle and pancreas. In addition to normal tissue expression, p44S10 is also expressed in several melanoma cell lines, such as MCF-7, 451Lu and WM164. Since forced expression of p44S10 in radial growth phase melanoma cells results in an increase in cellular proliferation, p44S10 may represent a potential link between regulation of proteasome activity and tumor cell proliferation in vivo.

Description:   This gene encodes a protein involved in peripheral nerve myelin upkeep. The encoded protein contains 2 PDZ domains which were named after PSD95 (post synaptic density protein), DlgA (Drosophila disc large tumor suppressor), and ZO1 (a mammalian tight junction protein). Two alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described for this gene which encode different protein isoforms and which are targeted differently in the Schwann cell. Mutations in this gene cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuoropathy, type 4F and Dejerine-Sottas neuropathy. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]Seems to be required for maintenance of peripheral nerve myelin sheath. May have a role in axon-glial interactions, possibly by interacting with the cytoplasmic domains of integral membrane proteins such as myelin-associated glycoprotein in the periaxonal regions of the Schwann cell plasma membrane. May have a role in the early phases of myelin deposition.

Description:   Fibulin-1 and Fibulin-2 associate with Fibronectin and other extracellular matrix proteins. In bone marrow, Fibulin-1 and Fibulin-2 bind to Fibronectin in the adherent layer. Fibulin-1 expression is stimulated by estrogen in ovarian cancer cell lines and has been suggested as both an agent of metastasis in ovarian cancer cells and as an indicator for predicting cancer risk or aggressiveness in ovarian carcinomas. The mobility of cancer cells may be inhibited with increasing exposure to Fibulin-1. Fibulin-2 binds to the lectin domains of extracellular matrix proteins aggrecan, versican and brevican. Fibulin-2 is abundantly expressed in heart, placenta and ovarian tissue, where it localizes to basement membranes and connective tissue compartments. In mice, differential Fibulin-2 gene expression correlates with the early phase of diabetic kidneys and glomerulosclerosis. The gene encoding human Fibulin-2 maps to chromosome 3p25.1.

Description:   The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, whose members are characterized by a dramatic periodicity in protein abundance through the cell cycle. Cyclins function as regulators of CDK kinases. Different cyclins exhibit distinct expression and degradation patterns which contribute to the temporal coordination of each mitotic event. This cyclin forms a complex with and functions as a regulatory subunit of CDK4 or CDK6, whose activtiy is required for cell cycle G1/S transition. This protein has been shown to interact with and be involved in the phosphorylation of tumor suppressor protein Rb. The CDK4 activity associated with this cyclin was reported to be necessary for cell cycle progression through G2 phase into mitosis after UV radiation. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2008].

Description:   Component of the ACF complex, an ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex, that regulates spacing of nucleosomes using ATP to generate evenly spaced nucleosomes along the chromatin. The ATPase activity of the complex is regulated by the length of flanking DNA. Also involved in facilitating the DNA replication process. BAZ1A is the accessory, non-catalytic subunit of the complex which can enhance and direct the process provided by the ATPase subunit, SMARCA5, probably through targeting pericentromeric heterochromatin in late S phase. Moves end-positioned nucleosomes to a predominantly central position. May have a role in nuclear receptor-mediated transcription repression.Component of the histone-fold protein complex CHRAC complex which faciliates nucleosome sliding by the ACF complex and enhances ACF-mediated chromatin assembly. The C-terminal regions of both CHRAC1 and POLE1 are required for these functions.

Description:   Orphan nuclear receptor that can act as a repressor or activator of transcription. An important repressor of nuclear receptor signaling pathways such as retinoic acid receptor, retinoid X, vitamin D3 receptor, thyroid hormone receptor and estrogen receptor pathways. May regulate gene expression during the late phase of spermatogenesis. Together with NR2C1, forms the core of the DRED (direct repeat erythroid-definitive) complex that represses embryonic and fetal globin transcription including that of GATA1. Binds to hormone response elements (HREs) consisting of two 5'-AGGTCA-3' half site direct repeat consensus sequences. Plays a fundamental role in early embryonic development and embryonic stem cells. Required for normal spermatogenesis and cerebellum development. Appears to be important for neurodevelopmentally regulated behavior (By similarity). Activates transcriptional activity of LHCG. Antagonist of PPARA-mediated transactivation.

Description:   The genus Salmonella is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus is composed of Gram-negative bacilli that are facultative and flagellated (motile). Salmonellae possess 3 major antigens; the "H" or flagellar antigen (phase 1 & 2), the "O" or somatic antigen (part of the LPS moiety) and the "Vi" or capsular antigen (referred to as "K" in other Enterobacteriaceae). Salmonellae also possess the LPS endotoxin characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria. This LPS is composed of an "O" polysaccharide ("O" antigen) an "R" core and the endotoxic inner "Lipid A". Endotoxins evoke fever and can activate complement, kinin and clotting factors. Until recently the most common cause of food poisoning by Salmonella species was due to S. Typhimurium. As its name suggests, it causes a typhoid-like disease in mice. In humans S. Typhimurium does not cause as severe disease as S. Typhi, and is not normally fatal. The disease is characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and nausea, and generally lasts up to 7 days.
