CD109 is a a novel member of the alpha2-macroglobulin (alpha2M)/complement superfamily. It is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked cell surface glycoprotein of approximately 170 kd found onendothelial cells, activated platelets and T-cells and on a subset of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Although it has been suggested that T-cell CD109 may play a role in antibody-inducing T-helper function and it is known that platelet CD109 carries the Gov alloantigen system, the role of CD109 in hematopoietic cells remains largely unknown.CD109 has been identified as part of the TGF-beta receptor system in human keratinocytes and upregulation of CD109 expression has been observed in several different types of tumour.

The genus Salmonella is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus is composed of Gram-negative bacilli that are facultative and flagellated (motile). Salmonellae possess 3 major antigens; the "H" or flagellar antigen (phase 1 & 2), the "O" or somatic antigen (part of the LPS moiety) and the "Vi" or capsular antigen (referred to as "K" in other Enterobacteriaceae). Salmonellae also possess the LPS endotoxin characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria. This LPS is composed of an "O" polysaccharide ("O" antigen) an "R" core and the endotoxic inner "Lipid A". Endotoxins evoke fever and can activate complement, kinin and clotting factors. The commonest Salmonella serotype associated with food borne infections in humans is Salmonella enteriditis and in particular phage type 4 (PT4). Salmonella Enteriditis bacteria may be found in the intestinal tracts of livestock, poultry, dogs, cats and other warm-blooded animals. This strain is only one of about 2,000 kinds of Salmonella bacteria; it is often associated with poultry and eggs.

Thyroid stimulating hormone, also known as thyrotropin, is secreted from cells in the anterior pituitary called thyrotrophs, finds its receptors on epithelial cells in the thyroid gland, and stimulates that gland to synthesize and release thyroid hormones. TSH is a glycoprotein hormone composed of two subunits which are non covalently bound to one another. The alpha subunit of TSH is also present in two other pituitary glycoprotein hormones, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, and, in primates, in the placental hormone chorionic gonadotropin. Each of these hormones also has a unique beta subunit, which provides receptor specificity. In other words, TSH is composed of alpha subunit bound to the TSH beta subunit, and TSH associates only with its own receptor. Free alpha and beta subunits have essentially no biological activity.

This protein is a catalytic subunit of the highly conserved protein kinase complex known as M-phase promoting factor (MPF), which is essential for G1/S and G2/M phase transitions of eukaryotic cell cycle. Ficolin B is the designation in mouse and rat of a protein also known as L-ficolin, ficolin-2, collagen/fibrinogen domain-containing protein 2, serum lectin p35, EBP-37 or hucolin. Ficolin B is a 313 amino acid member of the ficolin lectin family. It is a secreted innate immunity pattern recognition molecule expressed in liver and plasma that forms a disulfide-linked homopolymer. This extensive N-terminal disulfide bridge formation can lead to a functional dodecamer polypeptide. Ficolin B binds to DNA ligands expressed by late apoptotic and necrotic cells to increase attachment and engulfment. Variation in ficolin B concentrations amongst individuals is associated with polymorphisms in the promoter and structural portion of the FCN2 gene. In patients with Behé´t's disease (BD), there exists a significant difference in allele frequency for FCN2 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the -557 and -64 promoter sites within HLA-B51 positive and HLA-B51 negative subgroups.
