Description:   GEFT is a 580 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that is highly expressed in excitable tissues such as brain, heart and muscle, and weakly expressed in small intestine, colon, liver, placenta and lung. GEFT may play a role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization in different tissues since its activation induces formation of actin stress fibers. GEFT works as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the Rho family of small GTPases and links specifically to G alpha q/11-coupled receptors in Rho A activation. GEFT is an important regulator of processes involved in axon and dendrite formation. Involved in skeletal myogenesis, GEFT seems to be an exchange factor primarily for Rac 1 in neurons. Existing as two alternatively spliced variants, GEFT contains a DH (DBL-homology) domain and a PH domain.

Description:   The sense of taste is essential for the survival of organisms. For example, the ability to identify sweet-tasting foods enables animals to seek out food with high nutritive value, whereas the ability to identify bitter substances enables them to avoid the ingestion of potentially harmful substances. A family of integral membrane proteins are involved in taste perception and include T1R, which is involved in sweet taste perception and T2R, which is involved in bitter taste perception. Both types of taste receptors couple to various G proteins to initiate signal transduction cascades. Specifically, T2R38 is expressed in subsets of taste receptor cells of the tongue and exclusively in gustducin-positive cells. Variations in T2R38 are associated with the ability to taste the bitter chemical phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), also called thiourea tasting.

Description:   Belonging to the F-box family of proteins, FBXO45 is a 286 amino acid protein that contains one C-terminal F-box domain. F-box proteins are critical components of the SCF (Skp1-CUL-1-F-box protein)-type E3 ubiquitin ligase complex and are involved in substrate recognition and protein recruitment for ubiquitination. They are members of a larger family of proteins that are involved in the regulation of a wide variety of cellular mechanisms, including the cell cycle, the immune response, signaling cascades and developmental processes. They function by targeting proteins, such as cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, I˚B-å and ∫-catenin, for degradation by the proteasome after ubiquitination. Via its F-box domain, FBXO45 can directly interact with Skp1 p19 and CUL-1. FBXO45 has been shown to be an estrogen-induced gene.

Description:   Calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC) which plays a role in transepithelial anion transport and smooth muscle contraction. Required for the normal functioning of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) which generate electrical pacemaker activity in gastrointestinal smooth muscles. Acts as a major contributor to basal and stimulated chloride conductance in airway epithelial cells and plays an important role in tracheal cartilage development.

Description:   CYP2R1 is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are mono-oxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. This enzyme is a microsomal vitamin D hydroxylase that converts vitamin D into the active ligand for the vitamin D receptor.Defects in CYP2R1 are a cause of 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) deficiency, also known as pseudovitamin D(3) deficiency rickets due to 25-hydroxylase deficiency. First described in patients who had rickets at a young age despite a history of adequate vitamin D intake. The patients sera had low calcium concentrations, low phosphate concentrations, elevated alkaline phosphatase activity and low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Description:   SCGN is a 276 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that contains six EF-hand domains and is related to the calicium-binding proteins Calretinin and Calbindin D28K. Expressed in a variety of tissues including stomach, thyroid, colon, brain and neuroendocrine cells, SCGN is thought to be involved in cell proliferation and KCl (potassium chloride)-mediated calcium flux events. Through its interaction with KCl and its subsequent ability to modulate calcium storage pools within the cell, SCGN may function to negatively control growth and differentiation rates and, thus, indirectly inhibit cell replication.

Description:   Uromodulin: Functions in biogenesis and organization of the apical membrane of epithelial cells of the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop (TALH), where it promotes formation of complex filamentous gel-like structure providing the water barrier permeability. May serve as a receptor for binding and endocytosis for cytokines (IL-1, IL-2) and TNF. Facilitates neutrophil migration across renal epithelial (By similarity). Uromodulin, secreted form: Secreted into urine after proteolytically cleaveage. Into the urine, may contribute to colloid osmotic pressure, retards passage of positively charged electrolytes, prevents urinary tract infection and modulates formation of supersaturated salts and their crystals.
