Description:
Transaldolase 1 is a key enzyme of the nonoxidative pentose phosphate pathway providing ribose-5-phosphate for nucleic acid synthesis and NADPH for lipid biosynthesis. This pathway can also maintain glutathione at a reduced state and thus protect sulfhydryl groups and cellular integrity from oxygen radicals. The functional gene of transaldolase 1 is located on chromosome 11 and a pseudogene is identified on chromosome 1 but there are conflicting map locations. The second and third exon of this gene were developed by insertion of a retrotransposable element. This gene is thought to be involved in multiple sclerosis.

Description:
Sequence-specific DNA-binding protein that interacts with inducible viral and cellular enhancer elements to regulate transcription of selected genes. AP-2 factors bind to the consensus sequence 5'-GCCNNNGGC-3' and activate genes involved in a large spectrum of important biological functions including proper eye, face, body wall, limb and neural tube development. They also suppress a number of genes including MCAM/MUC18, C/EBP alpha and MYC. Involved in the MTA1-mediated epigenetic regulation of ESR1 expression in breast cancer.

Description:
Transcription factor that regulates the expression of genes with essential roles in cell differentiation, proliferation and survival. Binds to symmetrical DNA sequences (E-boxes) (5'-CACGTG-3') found in the promoters of target genes, such as BCL2 and tyrosinase (TYR). Plays an important role in melanocyte development by regulating the expression of tyrosinase (TYR) and tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TYRP1). Plays a critical role in the differentiation of various cell types, such as neural crest-derived melanocytes, mast cells, osteoclasts and optic cup-derived retinal pigment epithelium.

Description:
This gene encodes a member of the plasticity-related gene (PRG) family. Members of the PRG family mediate lipid phosphate phosphatase activity in neurons and are known to be involved in neuronal plasticity. The protein encoded by this gene does not perform its function through enzymatic phospholipid degradation. This gene is strongly expressed in brain. It shows dynamic expression regulation during brain development and neuronal excitation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

Description:
PLK1 (polo-like kinase 1) is a member of the serine/threonine protein kinase family, cdc5/polo subfamily. PLK1 contains two polo box domains with a predicted molecular weight of 68 kDa. PLK1 has been shown to regulate cdc2/cyclin B through phosphorylation and activation of cdc25c phosphatase. PLK1 is modified by phosphorylation at Threonine 210. PLK1 may also be required for cell division. Depletion of PLK1 results in apoptosis and deregulation of expression of PKL1 is correlated with development of many malignancies.

Description:
The collapsin response mediator protein (CRMP) family of five cytosolic phosphoproteins are highly expressed throughout brain development. The functions of CRMPs encompass signal transduction in developmental guidance cues as well as multiple cellular and molecular events involved in apoptosis/proliferation, cell migration, and differentiation. In the adult brain, the expression of CRMPs is dramatically downregulated. However, CRMPs remain expressed in structures that retain their capacity for differentiation and plasticity. The expression of CRMPs is altered in neurodegenerative diseases, and these proteins may have a role in the physiopathology of the adult nervous system.

Description:
Laminin S binds to cells via a high affinity receptor, laminin is thought to mediate the attachment, migration and organization of cells into tissues during embryonic development by interacting with other extracellular matrix components. Laminin S is a complex glycoprotein, consisting of three different polypeptide chains (alpha, beta, gamma), which are bound to each other by disulfide bonds into a cross-shaped molecule comprising one long and three short arms with globules at each end. Beta 2 is a subunit of laminin 3 (Laminin S), laminin 4 (S merosin), and laminin 7 (KS laminin).

Description:
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the MAP kinase family. MAP kinases act as an integration point for multiple biochemical signals, and are involved in a wide variety of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation, and development. MAPK11 is most closely related to p38 MAP kinase, both of which can be activated by proinflammatory cytokines and environmental stress. This kinase is activated through its phosphorylation by MAP kinase kinases (MKKs), preferably by MKK6. Transcription factor ATF2/CREB2 has been shown to be a substrate of this kinase.

Description:
Glial cells missing homolog 2 (GCM2), also known as Chorion-specific transcription factor GCMb, is a 506 amino acid nuclear protein. GCM2 is a transcription factor that acts as an essential regulator of parathyroid development. GCM2 is also thought to mediate the effect of calcium on parathyroid hormone expression and secretion in parathyroid cells. GCM2 contains one N-terminal GCM domain, which has DNA binding activity. Mutations of the gene that encodes GCM2 are associated with hypoparathyroidism, an autosomal recessive condition characterized by hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia.
