Description:   The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. This protein is a catalytic subunit of the highly conserved protein kinase complex known as M-phase promoting factor (MPF), which is essential for G1/S and G2/M phase transitions of eukaryotic cell cycle. Mitotic cyclins stably associate with this protein and function as regulatory subunits. The kinase activity of this protein is controlled by cyclin accumulation and destruction through the cell cycle. The phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of this protein also play important regulatory roles in cell cycle control. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq].

Description:   The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. This protein kinase is highly similar to the gene products of S. cerevisiae cdc28, and S. pombe cdc2. It is a catalytic subunit of the cyclin-dependent protein kinase complex, whose activity is restricted to the G1-S phase, and essential for cell cycle G1/S phase transition. This protein associates with and regulated by the regulatory subunits of the complex including cyclin A or E, CDK inhibitor p21Cip1 (CDKN1A) and p27Kip1 (CDKN1B). Its activity is also regulated by its protein phosphorylation. Two alternatively spliced variants and multiple transcription initiation sites of this gene have been reported. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

Description:   The cell commits to dividing during the G2/M phase transition, and the timing of mitotic entry is tightly regulated to guarantee correct chromosome segregation. D53, also referred to as tumor protein D52-like 1 (TPD52L1), is a coiled-coil motif-bearing member of the D52 tumor protein family. D53 intereacts with 14-3-3, a negative regulator of the G2/M transition, in breast cancer cells. Expression of D53 is highly upregulated at the G2/M phase transition in breast cancer cell lines, and deregulated expression of this protein can adversely affect the completion of mitosis. D53 may function as a signaling intermediate and/or regulator of vesicle trafficking and cell proliferation.

Description:   Proliferation Marker Ki67 antigen is the prototypic cell cycle related nuclear protein, expressed by proliferating cells in all phases of the active cell cycle (G1, S, G2 and M phase). It is absent in resting (G0) cells. Ki67 are useful in establishing the cell growing fraction in neoplasms (immunohistochemically quantified by determining the number of Ki67 positive cells among the total number of resting cells = Ki67 index). In neoplastic tissues the prognostic value is comparable to the tritiated thymidine labelling index. The correlation between low Ki67 index and histologically low grade tumours is strong. Ki67 is routinely used as a neuronal marker of cell cycling and proliferation.

Description:   p107 is a tumor suppressor protein that appears to be involved in cell cycle regulation, as it is phosphorylated in the S to M phase transition and is dephosphorylated in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. Both the RB1 protein and the product of this gene can form a complex with adenovirus E1A protein and SV40 large T-antigen, with the SV40 large T-antigen binding only to the unphosphorylated form of each protein. In addition, both proteins can inhibit the transcription of cell cycle genes containing E2F binding sites in their promoters. Due to the sequence and biochemical similarities with the RB1 protein, it is thought that the protein encoded by this gene may also be a tumor suppressor. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Description:   Carbocyanine dyes with long hydrocarbon chains have low fluorescence in aqueous phase, but become highly fluorescent upon binding to lipid bilayers, making this class of dyes ideal for staining cell membranes. Carbocyanine dye membrane staining is very stable, with minimal dye transfer between cells. Dilinoleyl carbocynaine dyes have much faster lateral diffusion rates than regular carbocyanine dyes, which facilitates labelling of neurons in tissues.
