Description:
GBGT1 is a 347 amino acid single-pass type II membrane protein that belongs to the glycosyltransferase 6 family. Localizing to the golgi apparatus membrane, GBGT1 is widely expressed, with high levels found in placenta, ovary and peripheral blood leukocyte, and lower levels expressed in liver, thymus and testis. GBGT1 utilizes manganese as a cofactor, and assists in the addition of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) in alpha-1,3-linkage to various substrates, resulting in the formation of glycolipids. Glycolipids are present in most eukaryotic cells and may assist in the adherence of certain pathogens. Existing as two alternatively spliced isoforms, the gene encoding GBGT1 maps to human chromosome 9q34.2 and mouse chromosome 2 A3.

Expressed at high levels in brain tissue, BSMAP is thought to play a role in brain function and central nervous system activity. The gene encoding BSMAP maps to human chromosome 19, which consists of over 63 million bases, houses approximately 1,400 genes and is recognized for having the greatest gene density of the human chromosomes. It is the genetic home for a number of immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily members, including the killer cell and leukocyte Ig-like receptors, a number of ICAMs, the CEACAM and PSG family and Fc receptors (FcRs).

Description:
Fatty acid-binding protein 6 (FABP6), is also known as Intestinal bile acid-binding protein (I-BABP), Ileal lipid-binding protein (ILBP), Intestinal 15 kDa protein (I-15P), Gastrotropin (GT). FABP6 is a cytoplasm protein which belongs to the calycin superfamily and fatty-acid binding protein (FABP) family. Isoform 2 of FABP6 is expressed in colorectal adenocarcinomas and their adjacent normal mucosa (at protein level). Isoform 1 of FABP6 is expressed in the jejunum, ileum, cecum and ascending colon intestine. Ileal protein FABP6 stimulates gastric acid and pepsinogen secretion. FABP6 seems to be able to bind to bile salts and bilirubins. Isoform 2 of FABP6 is essential for the survival of colon cancer cells to bile acid-induced apoptosis.

Description:
Cyclin dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is a key regulator of cell cycle progression in neuronal differentiation that physically associates with and is activated by the neuron-specific protein p35. CDK5RAP1 (Cdk5 regulatory subunit-associated protein 1), also known as Cdk5 activator-binding protein C42, is a 601 amino acid protein that specifically inhibits Cdk5 activation by p35 through formation of a dimer that inhibits kinase activity. CDK5RAP1 contains one TRAM domain, which is thought to bind tRNA and deliver the RNA-modifying enzymatic domain to its target. There are 4 named isoforms of CDK5RAP1 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events and are expressed at high levels in heart and skeletal muscle.

Description:
Crystallins are water soluble structural proteins found in the vertebrate eye. Mammalian crystallins are classified in three forms, designated α, β and γ. Crystallins, as the principal components of the lens, function to increase the refractive index of the eye during accommodation by forming high-molecular weight aggregates which maintain transparency. γS-crystallin (Gamma-crystallin S), also known as Beta-crystallin S, is a 178 amino acid protein that exists as a monomer which does not aggregate. γS-crystallin contains a two-domain beta structure and belongs to the beta/gamma-crystallin gene family mapping to human chromosome 3. γS-crystallin has been linked to congenital cataract development, a disorder signified by increasing levels of lens opacity.

Description:
SNX2 and SNX4 share a high degree of amino acid similarity with SNX1, as they all contain a characteristic phox homology (PX) domain. These proteins are all partially associated with cellular membranes, and they, likewise, associate with EGF, PDGF and insulin receptor tyrosine kinases. These nexins are widely expressed and yet have various tissue distribution patterns. Additionally, the sorting nexins can associate with each other and with a variety of other cellular proteins, suggesting that they exist as part of multisubunit complexes. The related protein, SNX3, comprises a distinct subgroup of nexins that share less sequence similarity outside of the PX domain and have dramatically different binding affinities for the tyrosine kinase receptors.

Description:
Human Pecanex proteins are homologs of the Drosophila Pecanex protein, a maternal-effect neurogenic protein that is involved in normal development of the fly nervous system. Three human Pecanex homologs exist, designated Pecanex, Pecanex 2, also known as PCNXL2 (pecanex-like 2), and Pecanex 3. Pecanex 2 is a 2,137 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein that exists as five alternatively spliced isoforms characterized by high mutational frequencies and biallelic mutations in colorectal tumors, thereby likely functioning as a target gene in these tumors. Pecanex 2 is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 1q42.2, which is linked to an inherited microduplication. This microduplication that includes Pecanex 2 may play a role in autism and mild mental retardation.

Description:
NOB1P is a 412 amino acid nuclear protein that is involved in proteosome biogenesis and is required for the final step in 18S rRNA maturation. NOB1P contains a PIN domain, which functions as a nuclease in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay and is required for pre-rRNA cleavage. NOB1P interacts with Rent2, which is involved in nonsense-mediated decay of mRNAs containing premature stop codons. Expressed in placenta, spleen, endothelial cells, liver and lung, NOB1P is essential for the synthesis of 40S ribosome subunits. Supression of the gene encoding NOB1P inhibits the processing of the 20S pre-rRNA to the mature 18S rRNA, therefore leading to accumulation of high levels of 20S pre-rRNA with degradation intermediates.

Description:
Nocturnin is a 431 amino acid circadian deadenylase protein that is expressed in a broad range of tissues with greatest abundance in the liver, kidney and testis. Nocturnin plays a role in circadian regulation as well as diet-induced obesity. The mRNA abundance of Nocturnin exhibits circadian rhythmicity, peaking after dusk in photoreceptors, spleen, heart, kidney and liver. Nocturnin is thought to be responisble for turning off genes that are involved in circadian regulation. In Xenopus retinal photoreceptor cells, the rhythmic regulation of Nocturnin is thought to be controlled by phosphorylated CREB. Mice lacking Nocturnin remain lean on high fat diets with a reduction in visceral fat, which suggests that this protein may also be responsible for lipid metabolism and fat storage.
