BMAL2 is a 636 amino acid protein that localizes to the nucleus and contains one bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix) domain, one PAC (PAS-associated C-terminal) domain and two PAS (PER-ARNT-SIM) domains. Expressed at high levels in placenta and brain and at lower levels in liver, thymus, heart, lung and kidney, BMAL2 functions as a component of the circadian core oscillator, which includes a variety of proteins that work in tandem to activate the transcription of target genes. More specifically, BMAL2, when functioning as a component of the core oscillator, binds to the E-box element (3'-CACGTG-5') of target DNA, thus inducing transcription. Multiple isoforms of BMAL2 exist due to alternative splicing events.

Nocturnin plays a role in circadian regulation as well as diet-induced obesity. The mRNA abundance of Nocturnin exhibits circadian rhythmicity, peaking after dusk in photoreceptors, spleen, heart, kidney and liver. Nocturnin is thought to be responisble for turning off genes that are involved in circadian regulation. In Xenopus retinal photoreceptor cells, the rhythmic regulation of Nocturnin is thought to be controlled by phosphorylated CREB. Mice lacking Nocturnin remain lean on high fat diets with a reduction in visceral fat, which suggests that this protein may also be responsible for lipid metabolism and fat storage.

YKL-39 is a 390 amino acid cartilage protein that belongs to the chitinase family of chitin-fragmenting hydrolases. Highly expressed in chondrocytes (cartilage cells) and synoviocytes (fibroblastic cells that line joint cavities), YKL-39 binds glycan structures with high affinity. Although related to bacterial chitinases, YKL-39 lacks the characteristic glutamate active site and, thus, does not have enzymatic chitinase activity. Patients affected with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have autoimmunity against YKL-39, suggesting that YKL-39 is involved in osteoarthritic and/or rheumatoid joint disease. Additionally, YKL-39 is upregulated in early degenerative cartilage diseases (such as RA) and may be a marker of chondrocyte activation in these autoimmune conditions.

Immunoglobulins belong to a group of related glyco proteins which make up 20% of serum proteins. Antigens and immunoglobulins react to confer immunity to individuals. Immunoglobulins have similar structures of two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains. Both the heavy chains and the light chains are divided into constant and variable regions. The constant regions have the same amino acid sequences between all the immunoglobulin classes. The variable regions have approximately 110 amino acids with high sequence variability. The amino acid sequence of the heavy chain determines the class of an immunoglobulin. The five types of immunoglobulin heavy chains are known as: IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD, and IgE. IgG is divided into four subclasses, and IgA is divided into two subclasses. In serum IgA and IgG are monomers with a single 4 polypeptide unit; while, IgM is a pen tamer. IgA may also form polymers. Kappa light chain antibody can be used for the identification of leukemias, plasmacytomas and certain non Hodgkin's lymphomas. Kappa light chain contains one immunoglobulin like domain. The EU sequence has the INV allotypic marker, Ala 45 and Val 83. The ROY sequence has the INV allotypic marker, Ala 45 and Leu 83.

A new Apaf1 Interacting Protein (APIP) also known as CG129 and MMRP19, has been identified as a negative regulator of ischemic injury. APIP competes with Caspase 9 binding site of Apaf1. APIP is predicted to code for a 204 amino acid. An isoform of APIP, APIP2 encodes a 242 amino acid protein, which is an alternative splicing variant differing in its N terminus from APIP. APIP transcript is ubiquitously expressed in most adult tissue with high expression in skeletal muscle, heart, and kidney.

SNX2 and SNX4 share a high degree of amino acid similarity with SNX1, as they all contain a characteristic phox homology (PX) domain (4). These proteins are all partially associated with cellular membranes, and they, likewise, associate with EGF, PDGF and insulin receptor tyrosine kinases (2). These nexins are widely expressed and yet have various tissue distribution patterns. Mitoferrin 2 is thought to play a role in heme synthesis of hemoproteins and iron-sulfur cluster assembly. Ubiquitously expressed, Mitoferrin 2 is found at high levels in skeletal muscle, heart, placenta, kidney, lung, liver, brain and pancreas. Mitoferrin 2 is a member of the mitochondrial carrier family and undergoes alternative splicing events to produce four isoforms. Mitoferrin 2 contains three solcar repeats and is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 10q24.2.
