Description:   In eukaryotes, it is essential to have the ability to detect and degrade transcripts that lack full coding potential. Nonsense-mediated RNA decay (NMD) protects the organism by avoiding the translation of truncated peptides with dominant negative or deleterious gain-of-function potential. Rent1, a mammalian ortholog of Upflp, is essential for embryonic viability (1–3). Rent1 (also designated regulator of nonsense transcripts and HUpf1) contains an N-terminal zinc finger-like domain, NTPase domains and a region comprised of domains that define Rent1 as a superfamily group I helicase.

Description:   Mammaglobin is a gene that is expressed almost exclusively in the normal breast epithelium and human breast cancer. It is a member of the secretoglobin gene family and forms a heterodimer with lipophilin B. It has been suggested that mammaglobin may be a useful marker for breast cancer clinical research. Studies investigating the detection of mRNA by RT PCR from circulating carcinoma cells in the peripheral blood of breast cancer patients have shown that mammaglobin is a highly specific marker and correlates with several prognostic factors, such as lymph node involvement.

Description:   The protein arginine deiminase (PAD) family of proteins, often referred to as peptidylarginine deiminases, catalyze the deimination of arginine residues of proteins. In the presence of calcium, the proteins in the PAD family act as catalysts for the posttranslational modification reaction that converts methylarginine to citrulline. The PAD proteins are cytoplasmic proteins primarily detected in eosinophils and neutrophils. The only tissue that contains all four forms of PAD (PADI1-4) is epidermis. PADI2 may play a crucial role during terminal differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes.

Description:   R-PE belongs to the family of phycobiliproteins, which are derived from cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae. R-PE has absorption maxima at 496, 546, and 565 nm respectively and emission at 578 nm, allowing it to be detected in the red channel by flow cytometry using 488 nm excitation. Because of its high extinction coefficient (~1,960,000) and high fluorescence quantum yield (~0.82), R-PE is by far the brightest dye for the 565 nm wavelength region.

Description:   Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection induces a disease state characterised by liver damage, inflammation and viral persistence. Infection also increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family of viruses. Its genome consists of partially double stranded circular DNA. The DNA is enclosed in a nucleocapsid, or core antigen (HBcAg), which is surrounded by a spherical envelope (surface antigen or HBsAg). The core antigen shares its sequences with the e antigen (HBeAg) but no cross reactivity between the two proteins has been observed. The HBV genome also encodes a DNA polymerase that also acts as a reverse transcriptase. Hepatitis B infection is normally diagnosed from serological tests that detect HBsAg but as the disease progresses this antigen may no longer be present in the blood and tests for HBcAg are used. If HBsAg can be detected in the blood for longer than six months, chronic hepatitis B is diagnosed. The antigenic determinant of the protein moiety of the HBsAg determines specific characteristics of different serotypes and provides the basis of immunodetection. HBsAg has antigenic heterogeneity, specifically, two pairs of sub specific determinants, d/y and w/r allow the following combinations: adw, ayw, adr, ayr.
