Description:
Transforming Growth Factor beta 5 (TGF beta 5) is a member of the TGF beta family of growth factors. The TGF beta polypeptides are multifunctional; capable of influencing cell proliferation, differentiation, and other functions in a wide range of cell types. Transformed, as well as nonneoplastic tissues, release transforming growth factors; and essentially all mammalian cells possess a specific TGF receptor. The multi-modal nature of TGF beta is seen in its ability to stimulate or inhibit cellular proliferation. In general, cells of mesenchymal origin appear to be stimulated by TGF beta whereas cells of epithelial or neuroectodermal origin are inhibited by the peptide.

Description:
The endophilins comprise a family of three SH3 domain-containing proteins designated Endophilin I, II and III, or alternatively known as SH3P4, SH3P8 and SH3P13, respectively. These proteins associate with Amphiphysin, Synaptojanin and Dynamin and are implicated in presynaptic vesicle trafficking at nerve terminals. The expression patterns of the endophilins are consistent with their cellular functions at the neuronal synapse, as Endophilin I is ex- pressed only in the brain. Both Endophilin II and Endophilin III are detected in a variety of tissues. Endophilin I is also implicated in modulating G protein-coupled receptor Signalling by functioning as an adapter protein and directing 1 adrenergic receptors to the endocytic machinery.

S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent histone methyltransferase that specifically methylates 'Lys-9' of histone H3. May function as a DNA-binding transcription factor. Binds to the macrophage-specific TPA-responsive element (MTE) of the HMOX1 (heme oxygenase 1) gene and may act as a transcriptional activator of this gene.

Description:
GMF-gamma is a 142 amino acid protein that belongs to the GMF subfamily of the larger actin-binding protein ADF family. GMF-gamma is expressed predominantly in lung, heart and placenta. GMF-gamma is considered a candidate regulatory growth factor protein, mediating both paracrine and autocrine cell-cell interactions. GMF-gamma is phosphorylated at N-terminal serine, and its phosphorylation is enhanced by coexpression of dominant active Rac 1 and Cdc42. GMF-gamma expression is significantly increased in a cardiac ischemia/reperfusion model where inflammation and angiogenesis take place actively. As a regulator of actin-based cellular functions, GMF-gamma may provide a novel approach to modulate the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases. GMF-gamma is primarily found in proliferative and differentiative organs.

Downregulates SLC1A2/EAAT2 promoter activity when expressed ectopically. Activates the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-kappa-B) transcription factor. Promotes anchorage-independent growth of immortalized melanocytes and astrocytes which is a key component in tumor cell expansion. Promotes lung metastasis and also has an effect on bone and brain metastasis, possibly by enhancing the seeding of tumor cells to the target organ endothelium. Induces chemoresistance.

Description:
FGFRL1 is a member of the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) family, where amino acid sequence is highly conserved between members and throughout evolution. FGFR family members differ from one another in their ligand affinities and tissue distribution. A full-length representative protein would consist of an extracellular region, composed of three immunoglobulin-like domains, a single hydrophobic membrane-spanning segment and a cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domain. The extracellular portion of the protein interacts with fibroblast growth factors, setting in motion a cascade of downstream signals, ultimately influencing mitogenesis and differentiation. A marked difference between FGFRL1 and the other family members is its lack of a cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domain. The result is a transmembrane receptor that could interact with other family members and potentially inhibit signaling. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same isoform have been found.

Peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase (PPIL1) is a member of the cyclophilin family of peptidylprolyl isomerases (PPIases). The cyclophilins are a highly conserved, ubiquitous family, members of which play an important role in protein folding, immunosuppression by cyclosporin A, and infection of HIV1 virions. Based on similarity to other PPIases, this protein could accelerate the folding of proteins and might catalyse the cis-trans isomerization of proline imidic peptide bonds in oligopeptides.

Description:
GSTZ1 is a member of the glutathione S transferase (GSTs) super family, encoding multifunctional enzymes important in the detoxification of electrophilic molecules, including carcinogens, mutagens, and several therapeutic drugs, by conjugation with glutathione. This enzyme also plays a significant role in the catabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine. Several transcript variants of this gene encode multiple protein isoforms. GSTZ1 shows minimal glutathione-conjugating activity with ethacrynic acid and 7-chloro-4-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole and maleylacetoacetate isomerase activity. It has low glutathione peroxidase activity with T butyl and cumene hydroperoxides and is able to catalyze the glutathione dependent oxygenation of dichloroacetic acid to glyoxylic acid. Highest expression in liver followed by kidney, skeletal muscle and brain. Also expressed in melanocytes, synovium, placenta, breast and fetal liver and heart.

Description:
DHRSX (dehydrogenase/reductase SDR family member on chromosome X) is a 330 amino acid protein belonging to the short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (SDR) family. Widely expressed, DHRSX is an oxidoreductase that contains a coenzyme binding site and a substrate binding site, indicating a possible role in cellular metabolism. The gene that encodes DHRSX is located in the pseudoautosomal region 1 (PAR1) of X and Y chromosomes. The X and Y chromosomes are the human sex chromosomes. Chromosome X consists of about 153 million base pairs and nearly 1,000 genes. The combination of a X and Y chromosome lead to normal male development while two copies of X lead to normal female development. There are a number of conditions related to an unusual number and combination of sex chromosomes being inherited, including Turner's syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome and Triple X syndrome. Color blindness, hemophilia, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are well known X chromosome-linked conditions which affect males more frequently as males carry a single X chromosome.
