Description:   Neuron navigator 2 (NAV2), also known as RAINB1 (retinoic acid inducible in neuroblastoma 1), POMFIL2 (pore membrane and/or filament-interacting-like protein 2), HELAD1 (helicase APC down-regulated 1), unc53H2 or steerin-2, is a 2,488 amino acid nuclear protein that plays a role in the development of sensory organs. Existing as thirteen alternatively spliced isoforms, Neuron navigator 2 displays 3' to 5' helicase activity and exonuclease activity and participates in the catalysis of ATP to ADP. Neuron navigator 2 is highly expressed in the nervous system of developing embryos and colon carcinomas, as well as in liver, brain and kidney. Lower levels of expression are found in lung, thyroid, spinal cord, heart, placenta and mammary gland. Neuron navigator 2 belongs to the Nav/unc-53 family and contains one CH (calponin-homology) domain.

Description:   The gene encoding DYX1C1 maps in the 15q21 region, which is disrupted by a translocation t(2;15)(q11;q21) and segregates with dyslexia. Two sequence changes in DYX1C1, including one involving the translation initiation sequence and an Elk-1 transcription factor binding site (-3G -->A) and a codon (1249G -->T), introduce a premature stop codon and truncate the protein by 4 amino acids. DYX1C1 encodes a nuclear tetratricopeptide repeat domain protein that is dynamically regulated in brain. In human brain, DYX1C1 protein localizes to a fraction of cortical neurons and white matter glial cells. It is also expressed in lung, kidney and testis.

Description:   Ubiquitination is an important mechanism through which three classes of enzymes act in concert to target short-lived or abnormal proteins for destruction. The three classes of enzymes involved in ubiquitination are the ubiquitin-activating enzymes (E1s), the ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2s) and the ubiquitin-protein ligases (E3s). DZIP3 (DAZ interacting protein 3, zinc finger), also known as UURF2 or hRUL138, is a 1,208 amino acid protein that localizes to the cytoplasm and contains one RING-type zinc finger. Expressed in a variety of tissues with highest expression in heart, skeletal muscle and kidney, DZIP3 functions as an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase that accepts ubiquitin from an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme, thereby playing a role in signaling events throughout the cell. Multiple isoforms of DZIP3 exist due to alternative splicing events.

Description:   Histones are basic nuclear proteins that are responsible for the nucleosome structure of the chromosomal fiber in eukaryotes. Nucleosomes consist of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of pairs of each of the four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). The chromatin fiber is further compacted through the interaction of a linker histone, H1, with the DNA between the nucleosomes to form higher order chromatin structures. This gene encodes a replication-independent member of the histone H2A family that is distinct from other members of the family. Studies in mice have shown that this particular histone is required for embryonic development and indicate that lack of functional histone H2A leads to embryonic lethality. Description:   Casein is the name for a family of related phosphoproteins. These proteins are commonly found in mammalian milk, making up 80% of the proteins in cow milk and between 20% and 45% of the proteins in human milk. Casein has a wide variety of uses, from being a major component of cheese, to use as a food additive, to a binder for safety matches. As a food source, casein supplies amino acids; carbohydrates; and two inorganic elements, calcium and phosphorus.

Description:   CD109 is a a novel member of the alpha2-macroglobulin (alpha2M)/complement superfamily. It is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked cell surface glycoprotein of approximately 170 kd found onendothelial cells, activated platelets and T-cells and on a subset of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Although it has been suggested that T-cell CD109 may play a role in antibody-inducing T-helper function and it is known that platelet CD109 carries the Gov alloantigen system, the role of CD109 in hematopoietic cells remains largely unknown.CD109 has been identified as part of the TGF-beta receptor system in human keratinocytes and upregulation of CD109 expression has been observed in several different types of tumour.

Description:   Multifunctional transcription factor in ER stress response. Plays an essential role in the response to a wide variety of cell stresses and induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in response to ER stress. Plays a dual role both as an inhibitor of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) function and as an activator of other genes. Acts as a dominant-negative regulator of C/EBP-induced transcription: dimerizes with members of the C/EBP family, impairs their association with C/EBP binding sites in the promoter regions, and inhibits the expression of C/EBP regulated genes. Positively regulates the transcription of TRIB3, IL6, IL8, IL23, TNFRSF1B/DR5, PPP1R15A/GADD34, BBC3/PUMA, BCL2L11/BIM and ERO1L. Negatively regulates; expression of BCL2 and MYOD1, ATF4-dependent transcriptional activation of asparagine synthetase (ASNS), CEBPA-dependent transcriptional activation of hepcidin (HAMP) and CEBPB-mediated expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG). Inhibits the canonical Wnt signaling pathway by binding to TCF7L2/TCF4, impairing its DNA-binding properties and repressing its transcriptional activity. Plays a regulatory role in the inflammatory response through the induction of caspase-11 (CASP4/CASP11) which induces the activation of caspase-1 (CASP1) and both these caspases increase the activation of pro-IL1B to mature IL1B which is involved in the inflammatory response.

Description:   G-protein coupled receptor for CRH (corticotropin-releasing factor), UCN (urocortin), UCN2 and UCN3. Has high affinity for UCN. Ligand binding causes a conformation change that triggers signaling via guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) and down-stream effectors, such as adenylate cyclase. Promotes the activation of adenylate cyclase, leading to increased intracellular cAMP levels.

Description:   A variety of morphological and molecular changes are required for mature spermatozoa formation. These steps are temporally guided by the transcription and translation of several testis-specific genes. SPANX (sperm protein associated with the nucleus, X-linked) family members are sperm- and testis-specific proteins containing between 97-103 amino acids, whose genes form a cluster on chromosome X. Sharing a high level of sequence similarity, SPANX-A, -B, -C, -D and -E localize to both cytoplasm and nucleus where they are associated with nuclear craters. SPANX-B (Sperm protein associated with the nucleus on the X chromosome B/F) is a 103 amino acid protein that is detected in round and elongating spermatids.

Description:   Receptor for the Fc region of complexed or aggregated immunoglobulins gamma. Low affinity receptor. Involved in a variety of effector and regulatory functions such as phagocytosis of immune complexes and modulation of antibody production by B-cells. Binding to this receptor results in down-modulation of previous state of cell activation triggered via antigen receptors on B-cells (BCR), T-cells (TCR) or via another Fc receptor. Isoform IIB1 fails to mediate endocytosis or phagocytosis. Isoform IIB2 does not trigger phagocytosis.
