Description:
The apolipoprotein L gene family maps to a region on chromosome 22 and encodes six highly homologous proteins designated apoL-I, apoL-II, apoL-III, apoL-IV, apoL-V and apoL-VI, all of which function as components of plasma lipoproteins. ApoL-IV (apolipoprotein L-IV), also known as APOL4, is a 351 amino acid protein that exists as multiple alternatively spliced isoforms, one of which is secreted. Expressed in spleen, placenta, spinal cord, uterus, testis and trachea, apoL-IV is thought to play a role in lipid exchange and transport throughout the body and may be involved in reverse cholesterol transport, specifically from peripheral cells to the liver. Overexpression of apoL-IV is associated with schizophrenia, suggesting that apoL-IV may play a role in the pathogenesis of neural disorders.

Description:
The forkhead domain-containing gene family (Fox) comprises over 20 members in mammals and is defined by a conserved 110 amino-acid motif containing a winged helix structure DNA-binding domain. The members of this gene family have been implicated as key regulators of embryogenesis, cell cycling, cell lineage restriction and cancer. As such, FOXN2 contains a domain with homology to the forkhead DNA binding domain. FOXN2, or Human T-cell leukemia virus enhancer factor, is a 341 amino acid protein mapping to human gene FOXN2, which has been localized to human chromosome 2p16-p22. This protein, encoded by a 1239-bp cDNA isolated from the Jurkat cDNA library, is capable of binding to a region of the human T-cell leukemia virus long terminal repeat (HTLV-I LTR) located between amino acids 155 and 117. This purine-rich region is important in the regulation of gene expression by the Ets family of transcription factors. FOXN2 is a unique cellular gene that may function in the transcriptional regulation of HTLV-I LTR.

Description:
The sense of taste is essential for the survival of organisms. For example, the ability to identify sweet-tasting foods enables animals to seek out food with high nutritive value, whereas the ability to identify bitter substances enables them to avoid the ingestion of potentially harmful substances. A family of integral membrane proteins are involved in taste perception and include T1R, which is involved in sweet taste perception and T2R, which is involved in bitter taste perception. Both types of taste receptors couple to various G proteins to initiate signal transduction cascades. Specifically, T2R50 is expressed in subsets of taste receptor cells of the tongue and exclusively in gustducin-positive cells.

Description:
Atypical MAPK protein. Phosphorylates microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) and MAPKAPK5. The precise role of the complex formed with MAPKAPK5 is still unclear, but the complex follows a complex set of phosphorylation events: upon interaction with atypical MAPKAPK5, ERK4/MAPK4 is phosphorylated at Ser-186 and then mediates phosphorylation and activation of MAPKAPK5, which in turn phosphorylates ERK4/MAPK4. May promote entry in the cell cycle (By similarity).

Description:
P55 is an extensively palmitoylated erythrocyte membrane protein, and a member of the MAGUK family. P55 also resists salt extraction, resulting in a high affinity for the plasma membrane. P55 contains a PDZ/DHR domain, a conserved SH-3 domain that appears to suppress tyrosine kinase activity of various oncoproteins, a 39-amino acid motif that binds to cytoskeletal protein 4.1R, and a guanylate kinase-like domain. Interaction with glycophorin C (GPC) and 4.1R suggests that p55 may play a role in the dynamic regulation in the erythrocyte membrane. In addition, p55 gene expression in vivo may be associated with a CpG island. P55 is constitutively expressed in K562 erythroleukemia cells during erythropoiesis and undergoes a 2-fold amplification after induction.

Description:
The CCR4-NOT complex is an evolutionarily conserved, multi-component complex known to be involved in transcription as well as mRNA degradation. Various subunits within the complex are involved in influencing nuclear hormone receptor activities. The CCR4-NOT complex is also involved in the regulation of Histone H3 lysine 4 methylation through a ubiquitin-dependent pathway that likely involves the proteasome. CNOT8 (CCR4-NOT transcription complex subunit 8), also known as CALIF or POP2, is a 292 amino acid protein that localizes to both the nucleus and the cytoplasm and functions as part of the CCR-NOT complex. Expressed ubiquitously, CNOT8 plays a role in transcriptional regulation for a diverse set of processes.

Description:
Core component of the CAF-1 complex, a complex thought to mediate chromatin assembly in DNA replication and DNA repair. Assembles histone octamers onto replicating DNA in vitro. CAF-1 performs the first step of the nucleosome assembly process, bringing newly synthesized histones H3 and H4 to replicating DNA; histones H2A/H2B can bind to this chromatin precursor subsequent to DNA replication to complete the histone octamer. CHAF1A binds to histones H3 and H4. It may play a role in heterochromatin maintenance in proliferating cells by bringing newly synthesized cbx proteins to heterochromatic DNA replication foci (By similarity). The CCR4-NOT complex functions as general transcription regulation complex. Also involved in vitamin D-coupled transcription regulation via its association with the WINAC complex, a chromatin-remodeling complex recruited by vitamin D receptor (VDR), which is required for the ligand-bound VDR-mediated transrepression of the CYP27B1 gene.
