Description:   FLVCR is responsible for the exportation of cytoplasmic heme groups. It is believed that it may protect developing erythroid cells from heme toxicity. Expression of FLVCR in cells will cause susceptibility to FeLV-C (Feline leukemia virus subgroup C) in vitro. FLVCR is found in all hematopoietic tissues, including peripheral blood lymphocytes and fetal liver, and some expression is found in pancreas and kidney. It is down-regulated in haemopoietic progenitor cells undergoing differentiation and hemoglobinization.

Description:   Plays a role in cell adhesion, and in cohesion of the endothelial monolayer at intercellular junctions in vascular tissue. Its expression may allow melanoma cells to interact with cellular elements of the vascular system, thereby enhancing hematogeneous tumor spread. Could be an adhesion molecule active in neural crest cells during embryonic development. Acts as surface receptor that triggers tyrosine phosphorylation of FYN and PTK2/FAK1, and a transient increase in the intracellular calcium concentration.

Description:   CFDP1 is a 299 amino acid protein that is involved in embryogenesis and normal cell function. When treated with CFDP1 peptide, mouse molar teeth increase in size, whereas treating cells with against CFDP1 shows an increase in the number of apoptotic cells and gradual tooth disintegration. CFDP1 is highly expressed in developing mouse teeth and is expressed at lower levels in liver, lung and heart. The gene encoding CFDP1 maps to human chromsome 16, in a region that has been associated with inherited craniofacial diseases, such as fanconi anemia type A. There are two isoforms of CFDP1 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

Description:   SERPINI2 is a member of the serine protease inhibitor (serpin) superfamily made up of proteins which play central roles in the regulation of a wide variety of physiological processes, including coagulation, fibrinolysis, development, malignancy and inflammation. It may have a role in a growth-control, possibly growth-suppressing pathway and, when impaired, may be involved in pancreatic carcinogenesis. The protein is a member of the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 family, a subset of the serpin superfamily whose members act as tissue-specific tPA inhibitors. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct protein isoforms have been found for this gene.

Description:   Transcriptional activator which binds specifically to the MEF2 element, 5'-YTA[AT](4)TAR-3', found in numerous muscle-specific genes. Also involved in the activation of numerous growth factor- and stress-induced genes. Mediates cellular functions not only in skeletal and cardiac muscle development, but also in neuronal differentiation and survival. Plays diverse roles in the control of cell growth, survival and apoptosis via p38 MAPK signaling in muscle-specific and/or growth factor-related transcription. In cerebellar granule neurons, phosphorylated and sumoylated MEF2A represses transcription of NUR77 promoting synaptic differentiation. Associates with chromatin to the ZNF16 promoter.

Description:   CDC-like kinase 2 (CLK2) belongs to a family of autophosphorylating kinases termed CLK (CDC2/CDC28-like kinases), which have been shown to phosphorylate serine- and arginine-rich (SR) proteins of the spliceosomal complex, and to influence alternative splicing in overexpression systems. Recent findings demonstrated that the CLK kinases activate PTP-1B family members, and this phosphatase may be an important cellular target for CLK action. Mutations in the CLK2 proteins affect organismal features such as development, behavior, reproduction, and aging as well as cellular features such as the cell cycle, apoptosis, the DNA replication checkpoint, and telomere length.

Description:   LSAMP is a neuronal surface glycoprotein found in cortical and subcortical regions of the limbic system expressed on the surface of somata and proximal dendrites of neurons. It is a member of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily and belongs to the IgLON subfamily of cell adhesion molecules. LSAMP contains three Ig domains and a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor. It is a highly conserved protein between rodents and humans (99% sequence identity) and it is involved in the regulation of neurite outgrowth and mediation of proper circuit formation of limbic pathways. This suggests that LSAMP plays an important role in the development and function of the limbic system. In addition, LSAMP may function as a tumour suppressor in renal carcinomas.

Description:   Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is the central enzyme in plasma triglyceride hydrolysis and is secreted by macrophages in the subendothelial space. Evidence has been provided that LPL produced by macrophages in the vessel wall exerts proatherogenic effects. The atherogenic effects of LPL have been mainly attributed to its ability to favor lipid accumulation within macrophages present in the atherosclerotic lesion. Recently, it has also been shown that LPL promote the development of atherosclerosis through facilitation of monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells, stimulation of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF ) secretion and induction of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation.

Description:   BMP2 belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) superfamily of secreted growth factors. It is a disulfide-linked homodimer and induces bone and cartilage formation. In addition to its osteogenic activity, BMP2 plays an important role in cardiac morphogenesis and is expressed in a variety of tissues including lung, spleen, brain, liver, prostate ovary and small intestine. The functional form of BMP2 is a 26 kDa protein composed of two identical 114 amino acid polypeptide chains linked by a single disulfide bond. BMPs control fundamental events in early embryonic development, organogenesis and adult tissue homeostasis.

Description:   The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the dual specificity protein kinase family, which acts as a mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase kinase. MAP kinases, also known as extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), act as an integration point for multiple biochemical signals. This protein kinase lies upstream of MAP kinases and stimulates the enzymatic activity of MAP kinases upon wide variety of extra- and intracellular signals. As an essential component of MAP kinase signal transduction pathway, this kinase is involved in many cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation and development. Description:   Transcription regulator of erythrocyte development that probably serves as a general switch factor during erythropoiesis. Is a dual regulator of fetal-to-adult globin switching. Binds to the CACCC box in the beta-globin gene promoter and acts as a preferential activator of this gene. Furthermore, it binds to the BCL11A promoter and activates expression of BCL11A, which in turn represses the HBG1 and HBG2 genes. This dual activity ensures that, in most adults, fetal hemoglobin levels are low. Able to activate CD44 and AQP1 promoters. When sumoylated, acts as a transcriptional repressor by promoting interaction with CDH2/MI2beta and also represses megakaryocytic differentiation (By similarity).
