Description:
C9orf79 is a 1445 amino acid single-pass membrane protein that belongs to the FAM75 family. The gene encoding C9orf79 maps to human chromosome 9, which consists of about 145 million bases and 4% of the human genome and encodes nearly 900 genes. Considered to play a role in gender determination, deletion of the distal portion of 9p can lead to development of male to female sex reversal, the phenotype of a female with a male X,Y genotype. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, which is characterised by harmful vascular defects, is associated with the chromosome 9 gene encoding endoglin protein, ENG. Familial dysautonomia is also associated with chromosome 9 though through the gene IKBKAP. Notably, chromosome 9 encompasses the largest interferon family gene cluster. Chromosome 9 is partnered with chromosome 22 in the translocation leading to the aberrant production of BCR-ABL fusion protein often found in leukemias.

Description:
The leucine-rich (LRR) repeat is a 20-30 amino acid motif that forms a hydrophobic å/∫ horseshoe fold, allowing it to accommodate several leucine residues within a tightly packed core. All LRR repeats contain a variable segment and a highly conserved segment, the latter of which accounts for 11 or 12 residues of the entire LRR motif. ISLR2 (immunoglobulin superfamily containing leucine-rich repeat 2), also known as LINX (leucine-rich repeat domain and immunoglobulin domain-containing axon extension protein), is a 745 amino acid single-pass membrane protein that contains five LRR repeats, one Ig-like (immunoglobulin-like) domain, a LRRCT domain and one LRRNT domain. ISLR2 exists as a homomultimer and is essential for axon extension during neural development. The gene encoding ISLR2 maps to human chromosome 15q24.1.

Description:
Made up of nearly 146 million bases, chromosome 8 encodes about 800 genes. Translocation of portions of chromosome 8 with amplifications of the c-Myc gene are found in some leukemias and lymphomas, and typically associated with a poor prognosis. Portions of chromosome 8 have been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Trisomy 8, also known as Warkany syndrome 2, most often results in early miscarriage but is occasionally seen in a mosaic form in surviving patients who suffer to a varying degree from a number of symptoms including retarded mental and motor development, and certain facial and developmental defects. WRN is a DNA helicase encoded by chromosome 8 and shown defective in those with the early aging disorder Werner syndrome. Chromosome 8 is also associated with Pfeiffer syndrome, congenital hypothyroidism and Waardenburg syndrome. The C8orf31 gene product has been provisionally designated C8orf31 pending further characterisation.

Description:
Unrip is part of the SMN complex that plays a role in snRNP assembly in the cytoplasm and pre mRNA splicing in the nucleus. Unrip interacts directly with Gemin 6 and Gemin 7 in the SMN complex. It is associated with the complex in the cytoplasm but not in the nucleus and thus is thought to play a role in it's subcellular localisation. It is a ubiquitously expressed protein that acts as an inhibitor of TGF-beta signaling and an important regulator of cell proliferation. Stable expression of STRAP results in activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase pathway and in down-regulation of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 (Cip1), which results in retinoblastoma protein hyperphosphorylation. Upregulation of STRAP might play a role in tumor development as an early event for colorectal cancers. It is the first component of the U snRNP assembly machinery that associates with SMN complex in a compartment-specific way and plays a crucial role in the intracellular distribution of SMN1.

Description:
Copper is an essential micronutrient used as a co-factor for several essential enzymes in all living organisms. Due to the high toxicity of copper, its metabolism is tightly regulated and defects in this regulation can cause Menkes (deficiency) or Wilson (accumulation) disease in various tissue. CUTC (cutC copper transporter homolog (E. coli)), also known as CGI-32, is a 273 amino acid protein belonging to the cutC family. CUTC is involved in copper homeostasis and is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 10, which contains over 800 genes and 135 million nucleotides. PTEN is an important tumour suppressor gene located on chromosome 10 and, when defective, causes a genetic predisposition to cancer development known as Cowden syndrome. Other chromosome 10 associated disorders include Cockayne syndrome, tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency and trisomy 10.

Description:
Calcineurin is a Ca(2+) dependent protein phosphatase that is involed in several neuornal functions. Proteins belonging to the RCAN (Regulator of calcineurin) family modulate the activity of Calcineurin through a valine-rich region within their carboxyl tail. RCANs compete with NFATs (Nuclear factor of activated T-cells) for binding to the same docking site in calcineurin, which results in either inhibition or activation of calcineurin activity. Calcipressin-2, also known as RCAN2 and DSCR1L1 (Down syndrome candidate region 1-like 1), is a 197 amino acid protein that is highly expressed in both the cytoplasm and nucleus of neurons and is the only RCAN family member that is found in glial cells. Calcipressin-3, also known as RCAN3 and DSCR1L2 (Down syndrome candidate region 1-like protein 2), is a 241 amino acid protein that potentially is involved in central nervous system development. Calcipressin-3 interacts with cardiac troponin I, suggesting that it may play a role in cardiac contraction events.

Description:
Diversin, also known as ANKRD6 (ankyrin repeat domain 6), is a 727 amino acid protein that contains eight ankyrin repeats and belongs to the ankyrin repeat domain protein family. Members of the ankyrin repeat domain family facilitate protein-protein interactions and function as adaptors of signaling pathways. Expressed in a developmentally-regulated manner and at highest levels in the brain, Diversin is believed to play a role in brain development. Via its ankyrin repeats, Diversin can directly interact with Dvl (dishevelled), an interaction that is essential for the activation of noncanonical Wnt signaling. In addition, Diversin contains a C-terminal domain that binds Axin/Conductin and a casein kinase-binding domain in its central region that specifically binds casein kinase Ié. Through the action of these additional domains, Diversin may also facilitate canonical Wnt signaling. Due to alternative splicing events, three Diversin isoforms exist.
