Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein that is hormonally regulated. This protein is localized exclusively to the surface of lipid droplets. In response to lypotic stimuli, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A. Once activated, perilipin has inhibitory affects upon hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), a protein that mediates the hydrolysis of triacylglycerol, the major form of stored energy in the body. Perilipin expression is limited to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. There are currently two known isoforms, Perilipin A and B. Both of these proteins are encoded by a single-copy gene and are the result of differential splicing events.

Relaxin is a peptide hormone produced by the corpora lutea of ovaries during pregnancy in many mammalian species, including man. The secretion of the hormone into the blood stream just before parturition results in a marked softening and lengthening of the pubic symphysis and a softening of the cervix, which facilitates the birth process. By inhibiting uterine contractions, relaxin may influence the timing of parturition. Like insulin, relaxin consists of two peptide chains, A and B, covalently linked by disulfide bonds. By further analogy to insulin, the two peptides are synthesized as a single-chain precursor polypeptide with the B chain at the NH2-terminus.

TMP21 is a ubiquitously expressed single-pass type I membrane protein localizing to the Golgi cisternae and the plasma membrane. It contains one GOLD (Golgi dynamics) domain and participates in protein transport and quality control between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi complex. In addition, TMP21 is a component of the heteromeric secretase complex (or Presenilin complex) and functions to regulate the ?secretase activity. ERCs (ERC1 and ERC2) also referred to as ELKS and CAST are related proteins which share an identical C-terminal sequence. They interact with the conserved RIM PDZ domain via an unusual PDZ binding motif. ERC2/CAST 1 is only expressed as a single RIM binding variant. All ERCs have been shown to interact with Rab6, a protein involved in membrane trafficking at the Golgi complex. The function of these proteins has not been determined yet. They may link Rab6 mediated non-neuronal membrane traffic at the Golgi complex to neuronal membrane traffic at the active zone executed via RIMs.

This gene encodes a member of the galectin family of carbohydrate binding proteins. Members of this protein family have an affinity for beta-galactosides. The encoded protein is characterized by an N-terminal proline-rich tandem repeat domain and a single C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domain. This protein can self-associate through the N-terminal domain allowing it to bind to multivalent saccharide ligands. This protein localizes to the extracellular matrix, the cytoplasm and the nucleus. This protein plays a role in numerous cellular functions including apoptosis, innate immunity, cell adhesion and T-cell regulation.
