ARHI contains a highly conserved GTP-binding domain, a putative effector domain distinct from that of RAS and RAP proteins, and a C-terminal membrane localization motif. ARHI mRNA is detected in all normal breast and ovarian epithelial cell cultures tested, as well as in normal ovary, heart, liver, pancreas and brain however ARHI expression is down-regulated in breast and ovarian tumors. Reactivation of ARHI expression in breast cancer cells is associated with increased histone H3 acetylation and decreased lysine 9 methylation of histone H3.

DCBLD2, otherwise known as ESDN (endothelial and smooth muscle cell-derived neuropilin-like molecule) is a novel type-I transmembrane protein with the longest cleavable secretory signal sequence among eukaryotes. It is expressed in various tissues; particularly highly expressed in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells. DCBLD2 is considered to play a role in regulation of vascular cell growth and may have a wide variety of functions in other tissues including the nervous system, like neuropilins.

PLAG1 is a transcription factor whose activation results in upregulation of target genes, such as IGFII, leading to uncontrolled cell proliferation: when overexpressed in cultured cells, higher proliferation rate and transformation are observed. Other target genes such as CRLF1, CRABP2, CRIP2, PIGF are strongly induced in cells with PLAG1 induction. Proto oncogene whose ectopic expression can trigger the development of pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary gland and lipoblastomas. Overexpression is associated with upregulation of IGFII, is frequently observed in hepatoblastoma, common primary liver tumor in childhood. Cooperates with CBFB-MYH11, a fusion gene important for myeloid leukemia.

This family of 21-amino acid peptides exists in at least three isoforms - ET-1, ET-2, and ET-3, and is produced in endothelial and epithelial cells. ET's can mediate biological effects in cells and tissues, and have been shown to bind to an ET receptor in the lung, kidney, heart, and liver. Endothelin 1 is expressed in lung, placental stem villi vessels and in cultured placental vascular smooth muscle cells.

Description:
X-gal (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D- galactopyranoside) is used to indicate whether bacteria express the ß-galactosidase enzyme, which is encoded by the lacZ gene. X-gal is cleaved by ß-galactosidase yielding galactose and 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-hydroxyindole, which is oxidised into 5,5'-dibromo-4,4'-dichloro-indigo, an insoluble blue product. Thus, if X-gal and an inducer of ß-galactosidase (usually IPTG) is contained within an agar medium on a culture plate, colonies which have a functional lacZ gene can easily be distinguished by their blue colour.
