Alpha-lactalbumin is the B protein of lactose synthetase secreted by the mammary epithelial cells. It is a potent Ca2+-elevating and apoptosis-inducing agent with broad, yet selective, cytotoxic activity. Multimeric ?lactalbumin has been shown to kill all transformed, embryonic and lymphoid cells tested, but not mature epithelial elements. This suggests that milk contributes to mucosal immunity not only by furnishing antimicrobial molecules but also by policing the function of lymphocytes and epithelium. ?lactalbumin may be helpful in discovering the site of origin of metastatic breast tumors. Human lactalbumin contains 123 amino acid residues. Comparison of the 5' flanking sequences of the two Alpha-lactalbumin genes with those of five casein genes reveals the presence of a highly conserved region extending from position -140 to -110 in all seven sequences examined, suggesting a possible regulatory role in the hormonal control or tissue-specific expression of milk protein genes in the mammary gland.

Dbx1 homeodomain transcription factor is expressed in progenitors at the boundary between the dorsal and ventral plates of the caudal neural tube, from which postmitotic cells migrate tangentially to their final destination. Dbx1 is implicated in patterning the central nervous system during embryogenesis. Cell fate allocation and cell diversity are determined at very early stages in progenitor cells at precise coordinates along the dorsoventral and anteroposterior axis. In the spinal cord, the spatially restricted expression of Dbx1 in progenitors is critical in establishing interneuron cell fates and helps coordinate diverse phenotypic features. In the telencephalon, Dbx1 is expressed in restricted progenitor domains at the borders of the developing pallium.

Penicillin refers to any member of beta-lactam antibiotics group. These agents are identified by a beta-lactam ring within their molecular structure. As the most widely used group of antibiotics available, beta-lactams are used for the treatment of bacterial infections usually caused by gram-positive organisms. Beta-lactam antibiotics are bactericidal, functioning to inhibit the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls. Bacterial penicillin-binding proteins and beta-lactamases constitute a large family of serine proteases that perform essential functions in the synthesis and maintenance of peptidoglycan cell wall. Notably, beta-lactamases cleave beta-lactams, therefore providing the bacteria with resistance to the antibiotic. Homologues of beta-lactamases occur in many species, including human, rat, cow, rabbit, pig, xenopus, zebrafish, and C. elegans. The human homologues, LACTB and LACTB2, are active-site-serine enzymes thought to be involved in metabolism.
