The CUB and sushi domain-containing proteins, CSMD1-3, are membrane proteins that are involved in cell-cell adhesion and are weakly expressed in most tissues, with higher levels of expression observed in the cerebellum and hippocampus. CSMD1 is part of the complement system that defends against pathogens through either the classical pathway or the alternative pathway. Located primarily in nerve growth cones, CSMD1 blocks the classical pathway of the immune system and is thought to be involved in tumor suppression, as defects in the gene encoding CSMD1 are associated with squamous cell carcinomas. CSMD2 and CSMD3 are located primarily in the brain and are implicated in some forms of head and neck cancer. Additionally, the CSMD3 gene is a candidate for induction of epileptic seizures.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are members of a large family of zinc metalloenzymes responsible for catalyzing the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. CAs show extensive diversity in their distribution and subcellular localization. They are involved in a variety of biological processes, including calcification, bone resorption, respiration, acid-base balance and the formation of aqueous humor, saliva, gastric juice and cerebrospinal fluid. CA XI, also referred to as carbonic anhydrase-related protein 11 precursor (CA-RP XI) or carbonic anhydrase-related protein 2 (CA-RP II), is a member of the carbonic anhydrase family that lacks two of the three Zn-binding motifs essential for carbonic anhydrase activity. For this reason, CA XI does not exhibit catalytic activity. It is expressed primarily in brain but is also found in spinal cord and thyroid. CA XI may play a role in brain development.Tissue specificity:Expressed abundantly in the brain with moderate expression also present in spinal cord and thyroid.

Amines, including those present on proteins, spontaneously react with glucose to make fructosamines in a reaction termed glycation. Fructosamine 3-kinase (FN3K), a 309-amino acid enzyme initially identified in erythrocytes, catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of the third carbon on both D- and L-fructosamines, leading to their destabilization and eventually, their removal from the protein. FN3K is a monomer that is ubiquitously expressed in mammalian tissue and phosphorylates both low molecular mass and protein-bound fructosamines which are formed as a result of glycation of glucose with primary amines. FN3K protects proteins from the harmful effects of nonenzymatic glycation, and may also be involved in peptide repair and cell metabolism. FN3KRP (fructosamine-3-kinase-related protein) is a 309 amino acid protein that is expressed in erythrocytes, bone marrow, spleen, brain and kidney and belongs to the fructosamine kinase family. FN3KRP functions to phosphorylate psicoamines and ribulosamines on the third carbon of their sugar moiety, thereby leading to the deglycation of the target amines.

Gelsolin is a calcium dependent actin binding protein. It is a potent modulator of actin filament length and gelation. Gelsolin has been shown to exist in at least two variant forms, cytoplasmic gelsolin and plasma gelsolin. Plasma gelsolin has also been called actin depolymerizing factor (ADF) or brevin. Human plasma and rabbit macrophage gelsolins differ by the presence of a 25 amino acid residue extension at the NH2 terminus in the human plasma gelsolin, which appears to account for the difference in relative molecular weights.
