Description:
Protein transport across the nucleus is a selective, multi-step process involving several cytoplasmic factors that mediate protein passage through the nuclear pore complex (NPC). Cytoplasmic proteins that contain nuclear localisation signals (NLSs) must be recognised as import substrates, dock at the nuclear pore complex and translocate across the nuclear envelope in an ATP-dependent fashion. Karyopherin alpha 1 and karyopherin alpha 6 are widely expressed nuclear import proteins that act as adaptors for karyopherin 1, specifically binding to and guiding NLS-containing proteins to the NPC. Both karyopherin alpha 1 and karyopherin alpha 6 contain one IBB domain and ten ARM repeats through which they convey their protein binding and localisation function. Together, karyopherin å1 and karyopherin å6 are responsible for ensuring the nuclear import of NLS-containing substrates

Description:
Calcium Signalling in mitochondria is important in order for it to function in response to a variety of extracellular stimuli. Signalling begins with Ca²⁺ entry in mitochondria via the Ca²⁺ uniporter followed by Ca²⁺ activation of three dehydrogenases in the mitochondrial matrix. ARALAR, the neuronal Ca²⁺-binding mitochondrial aspartate-glutamate carrier, has Ca²⁺ binding domains facing the extramitochondrial space and functions in the malate-aspartate NADH shuttle (MAS). ARALAR is encoded by the SLC25A12 gene and is expressed in brain and skeletal muscle. ARALAR is required for the synthesis of brain aspartate and N-acetylaspartatemay and plays a role in myelin formation. It is also essential for the transmission of small Ca²⁺ signals to mitochondria via an increase in mitochondrial NADH. In addition, ARALAR is implicated in conferring susceptibility to schizophrenia.

Description:
HCV is a positive, single-stranded RNA virus in the Flaviviridae family. The genome is approximately 10,000 nucleotides and encodes a single polyprotein of about 3,000 amino acids. The polyprotein is processed by host cell and viral proteases into three major structural proteins and several non-structural protein necessary for viral replication. Several different genotypes of HCV with slightly different genomic sequences have since been identified that correlate with differences in response to treatment with interferon alpha.

Description:
Sox genes comprise a family of genes that are related to the mammalian sex determining gene SRY. These genes similarly contain sequences that encode for the HMG-box domain, which is responsible for the sequence-specific DNA-binding activity. Sox genes encode putative transcriptional regulators implicated in the decision of cell fates during development and the control of diverse developmental processes. The highly complex group of Sox genes cluster at least 40 different loci that rapidly diverged in various animal lineages. At present, 30 Sox genes have been identified. Members of this family have been shown to be conserved during evolution and to play key roles during animal development. Some are involved in human diseases, including sex reversal.

Description:
The Major facilitator superfamily consists of presumed carbohydrate transporters with 10-12 membrane-spanning domains. Belonging to the facilitator superfamily, HIAT1 is a 490 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein that may function as a sugar transporter and is expressed in adult and embryonic brain. The HIAT1 gene was first observed while analyzing for active genes in neonatal mouse hippocampus. The gene encoding HIAT1 maps to human chromosome 1, the largest human chromosome spanning about 260 million base pairs and making up 8% of the human genome. There are about 3,000 genes on chromosome 1, and considering the great number of genes there are also a large number of diseases associated with chromosome 1. Notably, the rare aging disease Hutchinson-Gilford progeria is associated with the LMNA gene which encodes lamin A. Stickler syndrome, Parkinsons, schizophrenia, familial adenomatous polyposis, Gaucher disease and Usher syndrome are also associated with chromosome 1.

C18orf1 is a 306 amino acid single-pass membrane protein that contains one LDL-receptor class A domain and belongs to the PMEPA1 family. C18orf1 exists as five alternatively spliced isoforms that display selective expression and are encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 18, which houses over 300 protein-coding genes and contains nearly 76 million bases. There are a variety of diseases associated with defects in chromosome 18-localized genes, some of which include Trisomy 18 (also known as Edwards syndrome), Niemann-Pick disease, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, erythropoietic protoporphyria and follicular lymphomas.

DOM3Z, also known as NG6 or DOM3L, is a 396 amino acid ubiquitously expressed protein belonging to the Dom3Z family. The gene encoding DOM3Z maps to human chromosome 6 in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class III region. Chromosome 6 contains 170 million base pairs and comprises nearly 6% of the human genome. Deletion of a portion of the q arm of chromosome 6 is associated with early onset intestinal cancer, suggesting the presence of a cancer susceptibility locus. Additionally, Porphyria cutanea tarda, Parkinson's disease and Stickler syndrome are all associated with genes that map to chromosome 6.
