Description:
Humanin, an endogenous anti-apoptotic peptide against Alzheimer disease-related insults, consists of 24 amino acids. The secreted protein is a neuroprotective factor against death induced by several different types of Alzheimer's disease genes. Humanin protects neuronal cells from damage caused by Alzheimer's disease genes, specifically APP (amyloid precursor protein). Humanin acts as a ligand for formyl peptide receptor-like 1 (FPRL1) with APP and utilizes its neuroprotective effects by inhibiting FPRL1 access to APP. The peptide prevents Bax translocation from cytosol to mitochondria. Humanin expression levels may be dependent on defects in energy production in muscles with mitochondrial abnormalities. The peptide has been detected in muscles of patients with the mitochondrial disease chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO). Humanin is mainly expressed in the kidney, heart, liver, testis and skeletal muscles.

Description:
The protein encoded by this gene is a type II membrane protein that catalyses the transfer of sialic acid from CMP sialic acid to galactose-containing substrates. The encoded protein, which is normally found in the Golgi apparatus but which can be proteolytically processed to a soluble form, is involved in the generation of the cell surface carbohydrate determinants and differentiation antigens HB6, CDw75, and CD76. This protein is a member of glycosyltransferase family 29. Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC) which plays a role in transepithelial anion transport and smooth muscle contraction. Required for the normal functioning of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) which generate electrical pacemaker activity in gastrointestinal smooth muscles. Acts as a major contributor to basal and stimulated chloride conductance in airway epithelial cells and plays an important role in tracheal cartilage development.

Description:
The Major facilitator superfamily consists of presumed carbohydrate transporters with 10-12 membrane-spanning domains. Belonging to the facilitator superfamily, HIAT1 is a 490 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein that may function as a sugar transporter and is expressed in adult and embryonic brain. The HIAT1 gene was first observed while analyzing for active genes in neonatal mouse hippocampus. The gene encoding HIAT1 maps to human chromosome 1, the largest human chromosome spanning about 260 million base pairs and making up 8% of the human genome. There are about 3,000 genes on chromosome 1, and considering the great number of genes there are also a large number of diseases associated with chromosome 1. Notably, the rare aging disease Hutchinson-Gilford progeria is associated with the LMNA gene which encodes lamin A. Stickler syndrome, Parkinsons, schizophrenia, familial adenomatous polyposis, Gaucher disease and Usher syndrome are also associated with chromosome 1.

Description:
Contactins mediate cell surface interactions during nervous system development. Participates in oligodendrocytes generation by acting as a ligand of NOTCH1. Its association with NOTCH1 promotes NOTCH1 activation through the released notch intracellular domain (NICD) and subsequent translocation to the nucleus. Involved in motor coordination. Tissue specificity: Expressed in nervous system. Highly expressed in cerebellum. Expressed at intermediate level in thalamus, subthalamic nucleus. Weakly expressed in corpus callosum, caudate nucleus and spinal cord. Similarity: Belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Contactin family. Contains 4 fibronectin type-III domains. Contains 6 Ig-like C2-type (immunoglobulin-like) domains.

Description:
Glutamate receptors are the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in the mammalian brain and are activated in a variety of normal neurophysiologic processes. These receptors are heteromeric protein complexes with multiple subunits, each possessing transmembrane regions, and all arranged to form a ligand-gated ion channel. The classification of glutamate receptors is based on their activation by different pharmacologic agonists. This gene belongs to a family of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptors. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

Description:
Apolipoproteins are protein components of plasma lipoproteins. Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA1) promotes cholesterol efflux from tissues to the liver for excretion. ApoA1 is the major protein component of high density lipoprotein (HDL) in the plasma. It can function as a cofactor for lecithin cholesterolacyltransferase, which is responsible for the formation of most plasma cholesteryl esters. AI-BP (Apolipoprotein A-I-binding protein), also known as YjeF N-terminal domain-containing protein 1, is a 288 amino acid secreted protein that binds ApoA1, ApoA2 and HDL. Individuals with impaired renal function show an increased rate of AI-BP excretion, indicating that it is normally reabsorbed within the kidney tubules. AI-BP belongs to the YjeF N-terminal domain protein family, which includes proteins that are frequently involved in oogenesis and spermatogenesis. There are two isoforms of AI-BP that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

Description:
In the central nervous system GABA functions as the main inhibitory transmitter by increasing a Cl-conductance that inhibits neuronal firing. GABA has been shown to activate both ionotropic (GABAA ) and metabotropic (GABAB ) receptors as well as a third class of receptors called GABAC. In addition to GABA receptors, several proteins have been identified as regulators of GABA function, including GAD65, GAD67, GABA transporters and GABARAP (GABAA receptor-associated protein). GABARAP associates with GABAA Rg2 to link GABAA receptors to the cytoskeleton. The GABARAP protein sequence is similar to light chain-3 of microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) suggesting that it may be a type of MAP or a component of a MAP complex.

Description:
GAD-65 and GAD-67, glutamate decarboxylases, function to catalyse the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). In the central nervous system GABA functions as the main inhibitory transmitter by increasing a Cl- conductance that inhibits neuronal firing. GABA has been shown to activate both ionotropic (GABAA) and metabotropic (GABAB) receptors as well as a third class of receptors called GABAC. Both GABAA and GABAC are ligand-gated ion channels, however, they are structurally and functionally distinct. Members of the GABAA receptor family include GABAA R Alpha 1-6, GABAA R Beta 1-3, GABAA R Gamma 1-3, GABAA R Delta, GABAA R Epsilon, GABAA R Zeta 1 and GABAA R Zeta 2. The GABAB family is composed of GABAB R1 Alpha and GABAB R1 Beta. GABA transporters have also been identified and include GABA T-1, GABA T-2 and GABA T-3 (also designated GAT-1, -2, and -3). The GABA transporters function to terminate GABA action.
