The genus Salmonella is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus is composed of Gram-negative bacilli that are facultative and flagellated (motile). Salmonellae possess 3 major antigens; the "H" or flagellar antigen (phase 1 & 2), the "O" or somatic antigen (part of the LPS moiety) and the "Vi" or capsular antigen (referred to as "K" in other Enterobacteriaceae). Salmonellae also possess the LPS endotoxin characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria. This LPS is composed of an "O" polysaccharide ("O" antigen) an "R" core and the endotoxic inner "Lipid A". Endotoxins evoke fever and can activate complement, kinin and clotting factors. The commonest Salmonella serotype associated with food borne infections in humans is Salmonella enteriditis and in particular phage type 4 (PT4). Salmonella Enteriditis bacteria may be found in the intestinal tracts of livestock, poultry, dogs, cats and other warm-blooded animals. This strain is only one of about 2,000 kinds of Salmonella bacteria; it is often associated with poultry and eggs.

PDZK7, also known as PDZD7, is a 517 amino acid protein that contains two PDZ (DHR) domains. Encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 10q24.31, PDZK7 is conserved in dog, mouse and rat, and exists as three alternatively spliced isoforms. PDZK7 is known to interact with Harmonin, MASS1, USH1G and Usherin. Localising to nucleus, PDZK7 is expressed in retinal pigment epithelium and inner ear. Biallelic inactivation of PDZK7 can cause non-syndromic hearing impairment and chromosomal aberrations, which are linked to non-syndromic sensorineural deafness. PDZK7 mutations are also linked to Usher syndrome, which is characterised by retinitis pigmentosa and sensorineural deafness, and Alzheimer disease. The gene that encodes PDZK7 maps to human chromosome 10q24.31.

Cytokeratins, a group comprising at least 29 different proteins, are characteristic of epithelial and trichocytic cells. Cytokeratins 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8 are members of the type II neutral to basic subfamily. Antibody to cytokeratins are specific markers of epithelial cell differentiation and have been widely used as tools in tumor identification and classification. Anti Pan Cytokeratin (mixture) is a broadly reactive reagent, which Recognises epitopes present in most human epithelial tissues. It facilitates typing of normal, metaplastic and neoplastic cells. Synergy between the various components results in staining amplification. This enables identification of cells, which would otherwise be stained only marginally. The mixture may aid in the discrimination of carcinomas and nonepithelial tumors such as sarcomas, lymphomas and neural tumors. It is also useful in detecting micrometastases in lymph nodes, bone marrow and other tissues and for determining the origin of poorly differentiated tumors. There are two types of cytokeratins the acidic type I cytokeratins and the basic or neutral type II cytokeratins. Cytokeratins are usually found in pairs comprising a type I cytokeratin and a type II cytokeratin. Usually the type II cytokeratins are 8kD larger than their type I counterparts.

Lupus La protein (Sjogren syndrome type B antigen) (SS-B) (La ribonucleoprotein) (La autoantigen) plays a role in the transcription of RNA polymerase III. It is most probably a transcription termination factor. Binds to the 3' termini of virtually all nascent polymerase III transcripts. It is associated with precursor forms of RNA polymerase III transcripts including tRNA and 4.5S, 5S, 7S, and 7-2 RNAs. The phosphorylation sites are at the C-terminal part of the protein. Sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) often contain that react with the normal cellular La protein as if this antigen was foreign.
