Description:
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell. While they share a seven transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, olfactory receptors are responsible for the recognition and transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. Both OR2A4 (olfactory receptor 2A4) and OR2A7 (olfactory receptor 2A7) are 310 amino acid multi-pass membrane proteins that belong to the G-protein coupled receptor 1 family. The gene that encodes OR2A4 maps to human chromosome 6q23, while the gene that encodes OR2A7 maps to human chromosome 7q35.

Description:
Green fluorescence protein (GFP) is a 27 kDa protein derived from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria, which emits green light (emission peak at a wavelenth of 509 nm) when excited by blue light (excitation peak at a wavelenth of 395 nm). Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) has become an invaluable tool in cell biology research, since its intrinsic fluorescence can be visualized in living cells. GFP fluorescence is stable under fixation conditions and suitable for a variety of applications. GFP has been widely used as a reporter for gene expression, enabling researchers to visualize and localize GFP-tagged proteins within living cells without the need for chemical staining. Other applications of GFP include assessment of protein protein interactions through the yeast two hybrid system and measurement of distance between proteins through fluorescence energy transfer (FRET) protocols. GFP technnology has considerably contributed to a greater understanding of cellular physiology.

Description:
Phospholipase C beta 1 catalyzes the formation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and diacylglycerol from phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate. This reaction uses calcium as a cofactor and plays an important role in the intracellular transduction of many extracellular signals. Its gene is activated by two G-protein alpha subunits, alpha-q and alpha-11. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for its gene.

Description:
Transcriptional activator which triggers apoptosis in the absence of survival factors, including neuronal cell death upon oxidative stress. Recognizes and binds to the DNA sequence 5'-[AG]TAAA[TC]A-3'. Participates in post-transcriptional regulation of MYC: following phosphorylation by MAPKAPK5, promotes induction of miR-34b and miR-34c expression, 2 post-transcriptional regulators of MYC that bind to the 3'UTR of MYC transcript and prevent its translation.

Description:
Mutations in the ALS2 gene result in a number of juvenile recessive motor neuron diseases (MNDs), including juvenile primary lateral sclerosis (JPLS), a recessive form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS2); infantile onset ascending hereditary spastic paralysis (IAHSP); and a form of complicated hereditary spastic paraplegia (cHSP). The ALS2 gene encodes the Alsin protein. Alsin acts as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Rab5, a modulator of the endocytic pathway. Alsin is a cytosolic protein that is associated with small, punctate membrane structures. Therefore, Alsin may mediate membrane transport events, potentially linking endocytic processes and actin cytoskeleton remodeling. The ALS2 C-terminal-like protein (ALS2CL) also modulates Rab 5 activity.

Description:
Functions in the early steps of protein synthesis by forming a ternary complex with GTP and initiator tRNA. This complex binds to a 4S ribosomal subunit, followed by mRNA binding to form a 43S preinitiation complex. Junction of the 6S ribosomal subunit to form the 8S initiation complex is preceded by hydrolysis of the GTP bound to eIF-2 and release of an eIF-2-GDP binary complex. In order for eIF-2 to recycle and catalyse another round of initiation, the GDP bound to eIF-2 must exchange with GTP by way of a reaction catalysed by eIF-2B.

Description:
E3 ubiquitin ligase that, together with UBE2N and UBE2V1, mediates the synthesis of 'Lys-63'-linked-polyubiquitin chains conjugated to proteins, such as IKBKG, IRAK1, AKT1 and AKT2. Also mediates ubiquitination of free/unanchored polyubiquitin chain that leads to MAP3K7 activation (By similarity). Leads to the activation of NF-kappa-B and JUN. May be essential for the formation of functional osteoclasts. Seems to also play a role in dendritic cells (DCs) maturation and/or activation. Represses c-Myb-mediated transactivation, in B-lymphocytes. Adapter protein that seems to play a role in signal transduction initiated via TNF receptor, IL-1 receptor and IL-17 receptor. Regulates osteoclast differentiation by mediating the activation of adapter protein complex 1 (AP-1) and NF-kappa-B, in response to RANK-L stimulation. Together with MAP3K8, mediates CD40 signals that activate ERK in B-cells and macrophages, and thus may play a role in the regulation of immunoglobulin production.
