Description:
FERM domains are roughly 150 amino acids in length and are found in a number of cytoskeletal-associated proteins such as Ezrin, Radixin, Moesin and 4.1 (erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1), where they provide a link between cytoskeletal signals and membrane dynamics. EPB41L5 (erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1 like 5), also known as BE37 or YMO1, is a 733 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that contains one FERM domain, which it uses to bind CRB1 (crumbs homolog 1). EPB41L5 is a homolog of zebrafish 'mosaic eyes' (moe), and is widely expressed but found at highest levels in ovary, kidney and brain, and is known to colocalize with β-catenin. EPB41L5 may participate in tight junction positioning during the establishment of epithelial cell polarity, and exists as four alternatively spliced isoforms that are encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 2q14.2.

Description:
The cadherins are a family of Ca++-dependent adhesion molecules that function to mediate cell-cell binding critical to the maintenance of tissue structure and morpho-genesis (1-4). Cadherins each contain a large extracellular domain at the amino terminus, which is characterized by a series of five homologous repeats, the most distal of which is thought to be responsible for binding specificity (5,6). The relatively short carboxy terminal, intracellular domain interacts with a variety of cytoplasmic proteins, including catenin b, to regulate cadherin function (7). BR-cadherin (for brain-cadherin, also designated cadherin-12 or N-cadherin 2) is expressed specifically in neurons in the central nervous system and is thought to be involved in neuronal development (8).

Description:
SLC25A20 is one of several closely related mitochondrial membrane carrier proteins that shuttle substrates between cytosol and the intramitochondrial matrix space. It mediates the transport of acylcarnitines into the mitochondrial matrix for their oxidation by the mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation pathway. Mutations in this gene are associated with carnitine acylcarnitine translocase deficiency, which can cause a variety of pathological conditions such as hypoglycemia, cardiac arrest, hepatomegaly, hepatic dysfunction and muscle weakness, and is usually lethal in new born and infants.

Description:
Responsible for the deacetylation of lysine residues on the N-terminal part of the core histones (H2A, H2B, H3 and H4). Histone deacetylation gives a tag for epigenetic repression and plays an important role in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression and developmental events. Histone deacetylases act via the formation of large multiprotein complexes. Involved in muscle maturation via its interaction with the myocyte enhancer factors such as MEF2A, MEF2C and MEF2D. Involved in the MTA1-mediated epigenetic regulation of ESR1 expression in breast cancer.

Description:
Protocadherins are a large family of cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins that are involved in the establishment and maintenance of neuronal connections in the brain. There are three protocadherin gene clusters, designated alpha, beta and gamma, all of which contain multiple tandemly arranged genes. PCDHB1 (Protocadherin beta 1) is an 818 amino acid protein that is one of 16 proteins in the protocadherin beta cluster. Unlike the alpha and gamma gene clusters whose genes are spliced to downstream constant region exons during transcription, members of the beta cluster (such as PCDHB1) do not use constant-region exons to produce mRNAs. As a result, each protocadherin beta gene encodes the transmembrane, extracellular and short cytoplasmic domains of the protein. PCDHB1 is a single-pass type I membrane protein containing six cadherin domains.

Description:
The Src homology 3 (SH3) domain is a highly conserved 60 amino acid protein domain that is organized into a beta-barrel fold consisting of five or six beta strands arranged as two tightly packed anti-parallel beta sheets. This domain is found in proteins that mediate assembly of specific protein complexes and interact with other proteins, specifically recognizing proline-rich regions. BAIAP2L2 (Brain-specific angiogenesis inhibitor 1-associated protein 2-like protein 2) is a 529 amino acid protein containing an SH3 domain, suggesting that it may function as an adaptor protein. BAIAP2L2 also contains an IMD (IRSp53/MIM) domain, which enables the protein to bind to and bundle Actin filaments, as well as bind to membranes and interact with Rac GTPase. There are two named isoforms of BAIAP2L2 which are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

Description:
Semaphorins are a large family, including both secreted and membrane associated proteins, many of which have been implicated as inhibitors or chemorepellents in axon pathfinding, fasciculation and branching, and target selection. All semaphorins possess a semaphorin (Sema) domain and a PSI domain (found in plexins, semaphorins and integrins) in the N-terminal extracellular portion. Additional sequence motifs C-terminal to the semaphorin domain allow classification into distinct subfamilies. Results demonstrate that transmembrane semaphorins, like the secreted ones, can act as repulsive axon guidance cues. This gene encodes a class 6 vertebrate transmembrane semaphorin that demonstrates alternative splicing. Several transcript variants have been identified and expression of the distinct encoded isoforms is thought to be regulated in a tissue- and development-dependent manner. Description:
Human papilloma viruses (HPVs) can be classified as either high risk or low risk according to their association with cancer. HPV16 and HPV18 are the most common of the high risk group while HPV6 and HPV11 are among the low risk types. Approximately 90% of cervical cancers contain HPV DNA of the high risk types. Mutational analysis have shown that the E6 and E7 genes of the high risk HPVs are necessary and sufficient for HPV transforming function. The specific interactions of the E6 and E7 proteins with p53 and pRB, respectively, correlate with HPV high and low risk classifications. The high risk HPV E7 proteins bind to pRB with a higher affinity than do the low risk HPV proteins, and only the high risk HPV E6 proteins form detectable complexes with p53 in vitro. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are small DNA viruses which infect epithelia of the skin and mucosa. Over 90 types have been identified and they mostly cause a variety of benign lesions such as warts and verrucae. However, some subtypes, notably types 16 and 18, 31 and 33, have been confirmed as agents which cause cervical cancer. The E6 protein is a transcriptional transactivator. Binds double-stranded DNA. This protein may be involved in the oncogenic potential of this virus (cervical neoplasia-associated virus).

Cadherins each contain a large extracellular domain at the N-terminus, which is characterized by a series of five homologous repeats, the most distal of which is thought to be responsible for binding specificity. There are two isoforms of cadherin-29 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events. The gene encoding cadherin-29 maps to human chromosome 3, which is is made up of about 214 million bases encoding over 1,100 genes. Notably, there is a chemokine receptor gene cluster and a variety of human cancer related loci on chromosome 3. Particular regions of the chromosome 3 short arm are deleted in many types of cancer cells.
