Description: CAPS1 is a 189 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that contains four EF-hand domains, which serve as calcium-binding sites, and was first identified in canine thyroid. Interestingly, CAPS1 is much less abundant in humans than in canines. Synthesis and phosphorylation of CAPS1 is upregulated by cAMP-agonists in thyrocytes. CAPS1 likely functions in the regulation of ionic transport and may be involved in cross-signaling between cAMP and Ca(+2)-phophatidylinositol cascades. In addition to thyriod, CAPS1 is expressed in brain, salivary glands and lung. Expression of CAPS1 is increased in endometrial cancer and prognosis seems to be dependent on the level of CAPS1 expression, indicating that CAPS1 may be an appropriate prognostic marker for patient survival.

Description: ZPI, also known as SERPINA10 (serpin peptidase inhibitor, clade A (alpha-1 antiproteinase, antitrypsin), member 10) or PZI, is a 444 amino acid secreted protein that functions as a Protein Z-dependent protease inhibitor. Expressed by the liver, ZPI is secreted into the plasma where, in the presence of calcium, Protein Z and phospholipids, it inhibits the activated pro-coagulation factors X and XI (Factor X and Factor XI). This inhibition helps properly regulate intravenous blood clotting. ZPI, a member of the serpin protein family, contains five potential N-linked glycosylation sites and a tyrosine at position 387 which, when disrupted, renders ZPI inactive. Defects in the gene encoding ZPI may increase susceptibility to venous thrombosis, the formation of blood clots within a vein.

Description: The product of this gene belongs to a subfamily of calcium binding proteins, which share similarity to calmodulin. Calcium binding proteins are an important component of calcium mediated cellular signal transduction. Expression of this gene is retina-specific. The mouse homolog of this protein has been shown to express in the inner nuclear layer of the retina, suggested its role in neuronal functioning. The specific function of this gene is unknown.

Description: ARFGAP1 (ADP-ribosylation factor GTPase-activating protein 1), ARFGAP2 (ADP-ribosylation factor GTPase-activating protein 2) and ARFGAP3 (ADP-ribosylation factor GTPase-activating protein 3) are GTPase-activating proteins (GAP) that are associated with the Golgi apparatus and interact with ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (ARF). These proteins promote hydrolysis of ARF-bound GTP and are required for the dissociation of coat proteins from Golgi-derived membranes and vesicles. Dissociation of the coat proteins is required for the fusion of these vesicles with target compartments. The activity of ARFGAP1, ARFGAP2 and ARFGAP3 is stimulated by phosphoinosides and inhibited by phosphatidylcholine. The genes encoding ARFGAP1, ARFGAP2 and ARFGAP3 map to human chromosomes 20q13.33, 11p11.2 and 22q13.2, respectively.

Description: Non-signaling receptor for IL1A, IL1B and IL1RN. Reduces IL1B activities. Serves as a decoy receptor by competetive binding to IL1B and preventing its binding to IL1R1. Also modulates cellular response through non-signaling association with IL1RAP after binding to IL1B. IL1R2 (membrane and secreted forms) preferentially binds IL1B and poorly IL1A and IL1RN. The secreted IL1R2 recruits secreted IL1RAP with high affinity; this complex formation may be the dominant mechanism for neutralization of IL1B by secreted/soluble receptors.

Description: This gene encodes a member of the ADAMTS (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif) protein family. Members of the family share several distinct protein modules, including a propeptide region, a metalloproteinase domain, a disintegrin-like domain, and a thrombospondin type 1 (TS) motif. Individual members of this family differ in the number of C-terminal TS motifs, and some have unique C-terminal domains. The enzyme encoded by this gene is the von Willebrand Factor (vWF)-cleaving protease, which is responsible for cleaving at the site of Tyr842-Met843 of the vWF molecule. A deficiency of this enzyme is associated with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Alternative splicing of this gene generates multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Description: Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is caused by infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) an avian Birnavirus first described in the USA near the town of Gumboro Delaware and thus the disease is also known as Gumboro disease. There are 3 recognized pathogenic types of IBDV; classic virulent (cvIBDV), sub-clinical (scIBDV), and very virulent (vvIBDV). All three pathogenic types of IBDV cause immune suppression which leads to secondary infections and a failure to produce an immune response to vaccines. The cvIBDV typically cause a high morbidity and low mortality disease while the scIBDV cause very little morbidity and no mortality. The vvIBDV cause an acute disease in chickens characterized by high morbidity and high mortality.

Description: Dyrk (for dual specificity tyrosine phosphorylation regulated kinase) is the homolog of the Drosophila mnb (minibrain) gene which is required for neurogenesis. Dyrk is a dual-specificity tyrosine kinase and serine/threonine kinase, which is itself regulated by tyrosine phosphorylation. Several mammalian Dyrk related proteins have been identified and are thought to compose a family of dual specificity protein kinases. Dyrk family members, including Dyrk1A (dual specificity tyrosine-phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1A), Dyrk1B, Dyrk1C, Dyrk2, Dyrk3, Dyrk4A and Dyrk4B, are thought to be involved in diverse cellular functions. Localized to the nucleus and highly expressed in testis, muscle and the developing nervous system, Dyrk1A, also known as MNB or MNBH, functions to phosphorylate serine, threonine and tyrosine residues on various substrates involved in signaling pathways that regulate cell proliferation. Dyrk1A is a candidate gene for learning defects that are involved in Downs syndrome (DS), suggesting a possible role for Dyrk1A in the development of DS. Four isoforms of Dyrk1A exist due to alternative splicing events.

Description: F-box-like protein involved in the recruitment of the ubiquitin/19S proteasome complex to nuclear receptor-regulated transcription units. Plays an essential role in transcription activation mediated by nuclear receptors. Probably acts as integral component of the N-Cor corepressor complex that mediates the recruitment of the 19S proteasome complex, leading to the subsequent proteasomal degradation of N-Cor complex, thereby allowing cofactor exchange, and transcription activation.

Description: Mediates homophilic cell-cell adhesion in a Ca(2+)-independent manner. Also mediates heterophilic cell-cell adhesion with CADM3 and PVRL3 in a Ca(2+)-independent manner. Acts as a tumor suppressor in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Interaction with CRTAM promotes natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) secretion by CD8+ cells in vitro as well as NK cell-mediated rejection of tumors expressing CADM3 in vivo. May contribute to the less invasive phenotypes of lepidic growth tumor cells. In mast cells, may mediate attachment to and promote communication with nerves. CADM1, together with MITF, is essential for development and survival of mast cells in vivo. Acts as a synaptic cell adhesion molecule and plays a role in the formation of dendritic spines and in synapse assembly (By similarity). May be involved in neuronal migration, axon growth, pathfinding, and fasciculation on the axons of differentiating neurons. May play diverse roles in the spermatogenesis including in the adhesion of spermatocytes and spermatids to Sertoli cells and for their normal differentiation into mature spermatozoa.
