IL-4 is a pleiotropic cytokine that regulates diverse T and B cell responses including cell proliferation, survival and gene expression. Produced by mast cells, T cells and bone marrow stromal cells, IL-4 regulates the differentiation of naive CD4+ T cells into helper Th2 cells, characterized by their cytokine-secretion profile that includes secretion of IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-13, which favor a humoral immune response. Another dominant function of IL-4 is the regulation of immunoglobulin class switching to the IgG1 and IgE isotypes. Excessive IL-4 production by Th2 cells has been associated with elevated IgE production and allergy. Recombinant human IL-4 is a 14.9 kDa globular protein containing 129 amino acid residues. Recombinant rat IL-4 is a 14.0 kDa globular protein containing 126 amino acid residues. Recombinant murine IL-4 is a 13.5 kDa globular protein containing 120 amino acid residues.

The Notch ligand delta-like protein 4 (DLL4) is expressed highly and selectively within the arterial endothelium and has been shown to function as a ligand for Notch1 and Notch4. Cytochrome C (CYCS) is a small heme protein that belongs to the cytochrome c family. It is found loosely associated with the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. Cytochrome C is a highly soluble protein that functions as a central component of the electron transport chain in mitochondria. CYCS transfers electrons between Complexes III (Coenzyme Q - Cyt C reductase) and IV (Cyt C oxidase). CYCS plays a role in apoptosis. Suppression of the anti-apoptotic members or activation of the pro-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family leads to altered mitochondrial membrane permeability resulting in release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. Binding of Cytochrome C to Apaf-1 triggers the activation of caspase-9, which then accelerates apoptosis by activating other caspases.

Mannan-Binding Lectin Serine Protease 1 (MASP-1) belongs to the peptidase S1 family. MASP1 contains two CUB domains, one EGF-like domain, one peptidase S1 domain and two Sushi (CCP/SCR) domains. MASP1 is primarily expressed in liver. MASP1 involved in the lectin pathway of the complement, performs a key role in innate immunity by recognizing pathogens through patterns of sugar moieties and neutralizing them. MASP1 is synthesized as a zymogen and activated when it complexes with the pathogen recognition molecules of lectin pathway, the mannose-binding lectin and the ficolins. MASP1 is not directly involved in complement activation but may act as an amplifier of complement activation by cleaving complement C2 or by activating another complement serine protease, MASP2. MASP1 is also able to cleave fibrinogen and factor XIII and may may be involved in coagulation. MASP1 is inhibited by SERPING1 and A2M.
