Description:
Nerve growth factor receptor (NGFR) is also referred to as p75(NTR) due to its molecular mass and its ability to bind at low affinity not only NGF (see 162030), but also other neurotrophins, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF; 113505), neurotrophin-3 (NTF3; 162660), and neurotrophin-4/5 (NTF5; 162662). At the time of its discovery, NGFR was considered a unique type of protein. Subsequently, however, a large superfamily of tumor necrosis factor receptors were found to share the overall structure of NGFR (4 extracellular ligand-binding, cysteine-rich repeats, or CRs, and signaling through association with, or disassociation from, cytoplasmic interactors). The identification of this superfamily helped elucidate some of the biologic functions of NGFR, including its ultimate involvement in the nuclear factor kappa-B (NFKB; see 164011) and apoptosis pathways. As a monomer, NGFR binds NGF with low affinity. Higher affinity binding is achieved by association with higher molecular mass, low-affinity neurotrophin receptors, namely the tropomyosin receptor kinases, TRKA (NTRK1; 191315), TRKB (NTRK2; 600456), and TRKC (NTRK3; 191316). TRKA, TRKB, and TRKC are specific for or 'preferred by' NGF, NTF5 and BDNF, and NTF3, respectively (Ip et al., 1993). NTF3 also binds to TRKA and TRKB, but with significantly lower affinity

Streptavidin is biotin-binding protein that was originally isolated from Streptomyces avidinii. In contrast to avidin, streptavidin has no carbohydrate and has a mildly acidic pI of 5. Streptavidin products use a recombinant form of streptavidin having a mass of 53,000 daltons and a near-neutral pI. Streptavidin is a tetrameric protein, with each subunit binding one molecule of biotin with affinity similar to that of avidin. Guanidinium chloride will dissociate avidin and streptavidin into subunits, but streptavidin is more resistant to dissociation.

Description:
CEA-related cell adhesion molecule 8 (CEACAM8) belongs to the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family. It encodes a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked glycoprotein with a molecular mass of of 95kD and is expressed in cells of the granulocyte-lineage. It is expressed in neutrophils and eosinophils and is characterized as a granulocyte-specific activation antigen. Therefore CEACAM8 could serve as a marker for granulocyte activities. Like all members of the CEA family, it consists of a single N domain, with structural homology to the immunoglobulin variable domains, followed by two immunoglobulin constant-like A and B domains.

Two types of 15-lipoxygenase (15-LO) have been discovered and characterised, both of which metabolise arachidonic acid (AA) to produce 15(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15(S)-HETE). 15-LO-1 oxygenates AA at both C-15 and C-12, whereas 15-LO-2 exclusively oxygenates C-15 of AA. Human 15-LO-2 has a molecular mass of approximately 76 kDa and exhibits approximately 40% identity to the reticulocyte 15-LO-1.2,3 expression of 15-LO-2 appears to be restricted to prostate, lung, skin, and cornea and may play a role in the normal development of these tissues.

Early B-cell factor 2 is a 575 amino acid protein belonging to the COE family of proteins, whose members are all helix-loop-helix transcription factors. EBF2 is a transcription factor which, in synergy with the Wnt-responsive LEF1/CTNNB1 pathway, activates the decoy receptor for RANKL, OPG, in osteoblasts. OPG, in turn, regulates osteoclast differentiation. Lack of EBF2 has been found to cause a small defect in the terminal differentiation of osteoblasts, along with reduced bone mass and an increase in osteoclasts. Localized to the nucleus, EBF2 forms a homodimer or a heterodimer with a related family member.
