Description:   MPG (N-methylpurine DNA glycosylase, or 3-methyladenine (3MeA) DNA glycosylase) repairs the 3MeA lethal lesion blocking DNA replication in Escherichia coli. Analysis of human cDNA libraries found a cDNA that would hybridise to human genomic DNA but not to E. coli or yeast DNA. This MPG gene has been mapped to human chromosome 16 by analysis of a panel of DNAs from mouse/human and hamster/human hybrid cell lines.

Description:   SLC37A4 transports glucose-6-phosphate from the cytoplasm to the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. It forms a complex with glucose-6-phosphatase which is responsible for glucose production through glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Hence, it plays a central role in homeostatic regulation of blood glucose levels.

Description:   This gene encodes a member of the pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase family. The encoded protein phosphorylates pyruvate dehydrogenase, down-regulating the activity of the mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. Overexpression of this gene may play a role in both cancer and diabetes. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2010].

Description:   QRFP is a 136 amino acid secreted protein that is widely expressed in the brain with highest expression levels in the cerebellum, medulla, pituitary, retina, vestibular nucleus and white matter. Also expressed in the bladder, colon, coronary artery, parathyroid gland, prostate, testis and thyroid, QRFP is a member of the RFamide neuropeptide family. QRFP may be involved in aldosterone secretion by the adrenal gland and is also implicated in stimulating metabolic rate, locomotor activity and increasing blood pressure. Considered a ligand for the G-protein coupled receptor GPR103, QRFP may have orexigenic activity, thereby acting as an appetite stimulant. The gene encoding QFRP is located on human chromosome 9, which consists of about 145 million bases, comprises roughly 4% of the human genome and encodes nearly 900 genes.

Description:   The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the membrane-associated guanylate kinase (MAGUK) family, a class of proteins that functions as molecular scaffolds for the assembly of multiprotein complexes at specialized regions of the plasma membrane. This protein is also a member of the CARD protein family, which is defined by carrying a characteristic caspase-associated recruitment domain (CARD). This protein shares a similar domain structure with CARD11 protein. The CARD domains of both proteins have been shown to specifically interact with BCL10, a protein known to function as a positive regulator of cell apoptosis and NF-kappaB activation. When expressed in cells, this protein activated NF-kappaB and induced the phosphorylation of BCL10. Two alternatively spliced variants of this gene encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.

Description:   Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) family proteins play critical roles in various nuclear events that require structural changes of chromosomes, including mitotic chromosome organization, DNA recombination and repair and global transcriptional repression. The chromosome proteins are conserved in eukaryotes and can lead to mitotic chromosome segregation defects, suggesting a critical function of SMC family proteins in mitotic chromosome dynamics. SMC1 and SMC3 form a heterodimeric complex required for metaphase progression in mitotic cells. Specifically this SMC1/SMC3 complex is responsible for sister chromatid cohesion during metaphase. A number of cellular factors interact with hSMC1/hSMC3 during cell cycle. The major population of hSMC1/hSMC3 is in a compex with hRAD21 forming the human cohesion complex. Human cohesion complex associates with chromosomes which peaks at S phase and dissociates from chromosomes during G2/M transition. In addition, a subpopulation of hSMC1/hSMC3 associates tightly with nuclear matrix and centrosomes during interphase. A subset of hSMC1/hSMC3 is localized to spindle poles, spindles and kinetochores during mitosis when cohesin is in the cytoplasm. hSMC1/hSMC3 is required for spindle aster formation in vitro and reacts with nuclear mitotic apparatus protein in vivo.

Description:   Steroid and thyroid hormones and retinoic acid regulate a complex array of gene expression activity via intracellular receptor transcription factors belonging to the ligand dependent nuclear receptor superfamily. Adding to the complexity of function of these transcription factors are associated proteins known as coactivators and corepressors which, as their names suggest, enhance or depress transcriptional activity of the nuclear receptor with which they associate. One such coactivator is KAT13C / nuclear receptor coactivator 2 (NCOA2), also termed Glucocorticoid receptor-interacting protein 1 (GRIP1).

Description:   Zinc-finger proteins contain DNA-binding domains and have a wide variety of functions, most of which encompass some form of transcriptional activation or repression. The majority of zinc-finger proteins contain a Krüppel-type DNA binding domain and a KRAB domain, which is thought to interact with KAP1, thereby recruiting histone modifying proteins. ZNF786 (zinc finger protein 786) is a 782 amino acid protein that belongs to the Krüppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family and is thought to function in transcriptional regulation. Localizing to nucleus, ZNF786 contains sixteen C2H2-type zinc fingers, a single KRAB domain and is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 7q36.1.
