Description:   Non-lysosomal glucosylceramidase that catalyzes the conversion of glucosylceramide (GlcCer) to free glucose and ceramide. Involved in sphingomyelin generation and prevention of glycolipid accumulation. May also catalyze the hydrolysis of bile acid 3-O-glucosides, however, the relevance of such activity is unclear in vivo. Plays a role in central nevous system development. Required for proper formation of motor neuron axons.

Description:   Sox genes comprise a family of genes that are related to the mammalian sex determining gene SRY. These genes similarly contain sequences that encode for the HMG-box domain, which is responsible for the sequence-specific DNA-binding activity. Sox genes encode putative transcriptional regulators implicated in the decision of cell fates during development and the control of diverse developmental processes. The highly complex group of Sox genes cluster at least 40 different loci that rapidly diverged in various animal lineages. At present, 30 Sox genes have been identified. Members of this family have been shown to be conserved during evolution and to play key roles during animal development. Some are involved in human diseases, including sex reversal.

Description:   Protocadherins are a subfamily of cadherins, a large group of related glycoproteins that mediate calcium-dependent cell-to-cell adhesion via a homophilic mechanism. Involved in a variety of functions, protocadherins help to regulate neural development and synapse formation. PCDH1 is a 1,026 amino acid single-pass type I membrane protein that contains seven cadherin domains and is a member of the protocadherin family. Localized to cell-cell and cell-matrix boundaries and expressed at high levels in brain and neuro-glial cells, PCDH1 is thought to be involved in cell adhesion and cell-cell interactions and may play a role in neuronal development. PCDH1 contains a C-terminal cytoplasmic region, an extracellular region and a transmembrane region, and is expressed as two isoforms due to alternative splicing events.

Description:   EGR3 is a member of the early growth response transcription factor family of C2H2 zinc finger proteins (other members EGR1, EGR2 and EGR4). EGR proteins are immediate early proteins, expression of which is swiftly upregulated in response to a wide range of extracellular stimuli. EGR3 is also thought to be involved in development of muscle spindles, and is upregulated in several regions of the brain in response to stress or injury.

Description:   The protein encoded by this gene has been termed a 'growth' or 'plasticity' protein because it is expressed at high levels in neuronal growth cones during development and axonal regeneration. This protein is considered a crucial component of an effective regenerative response in the nervous system. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Description:   Calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC) which plays a role in transepithelial anion transport and smooth muscle contraction. Required for the normal functioning of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) which generate electrical pacemaker activity in gastrointestinal smooth muscles. Acts as a major contributor to basal and stimulated chloride conductance in airway epithelial cells and plays an important role in tracheal cartilage development.

Description:   This gene encodes a protein that is highly similar to the mouse cGMP-dependent protein kinase anchoring protein 42kDa. The mouse protein has been found to localize with the Golgi and recruit cGMP-dependent protein kinase I alpha to the Golgi in mouse testes. It is thought to play a role in germ cell development. Transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Description:   SPDEF, also known as PDEF is an ETS transcription factor expressed in the prostate epithelial cells. It is thought to act as an androgen-independent transactivator of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) promoter and also as a transcriptional activator for the SERPINB5 promoter. It is highly expressed in prostate carcinoma cells and is thought to be involved in the regulation of the prostate gland and/or prostate cancer development. It is also expressed in epithelial breast carcinoma.

Description:   Kavain is one constituent of kava-kava, an herbal drug of the South Pacific islands, which displays anti-convulsive, anxiolytic, analgesic and muscle relaxing properties. Kavain inhibits voltage-dependent Na+ channels in rat CA1 hippocampal neurons. It displays protective effects in the MPTP mouse model of Parkinson's disease but potentiates NMDA toxicity in the developing hippocampus.

Description:   Transcription factor that binds and activates the promoter of thyroid specific genes such as thyroglobulin, thyroperoxidase, and thyrotropin receptor. Crucial in the maintenance of the thyroid differentiation phenotype. May play a role in lung development and surfactant homeostasis. Activates the transcription of GNRHR and plays a role in enhancing the circadian oscillation of its gene expression. Represses the transcription of the circadian transcriptional repressor NR1D1 (By similarity).
