Description:
The p70/p80 autoantigen is a nuclear complex consisting of two subunits with molecular masses of approximately 70 and 80 kDa. The complex functions as a single-stranded DNA-dependent ATP-dependent helicase. The complex may be involved in the repair of nonhomologous DNA ends such as that required for double-strand break repair, transposition, and V (D)J recombination. High levels of autoantibodies to p70 and p80 have been found in some patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Erythropoietin is the principal hormone involved in the regulation of erythropoiesis by stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells and the maintenance of a physiological level of circulating erythrocyte mass. It is a glycoprotein produced primarily by the kidney. The biological effects of EPO are mediated by the erythropoietin receptor (Epo R). Genetic variations in EPO is associated with susceptibility to microvascular complications of diabetes type 2 (MVCD2) (including diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy leading to end-stage renal disease and diabetic neuropathy). It is used for the treatment of anemia and misused as a performance-enhancing drug in endurance athletes.

Fibroblast growth factor 4 (FGF-4) is a member of the FGF superfamily (Beenken and Mohammadi). FGF-4 is expressed in pluripotent stem cells and is implicated in various stages of development and morphogenesis in a variety of organisms (Kosaka <i>et al.</i> 2009). FGF-4 has been shown to have an ability to promote neural stem cell proliferation and neuronal differentiation in the postnatal brain (Kosaka <i>et al.</i> 2006). FGF-4 has also been shown to increase the proliferation rate of mesenchymal stem cells (Farré <i>et al.</i>). FGF-4 supports the maintenance and self-renewal properties of human embryonic stem cells and also promotes the proliferation of these cells (Mayshar <i>et al.</i>). In the mouse, the Fgf4 gene also supports proliferation of the inner cell mass (ICM) and postimplantation embryos (Feldman <i>et al.</i>).

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional 24 kDa protein originally discovered in the medium of RNA stimulated fibroblastoid cells. It is upregulated by IL1, TNF, PDGF, IFN beta, TNF alpha, NGF, IL17 and downregulated by glucocorticoids IL4, TGF beta. CD34 is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular mass of approximately 110 kD that is selectively expressed on human hematopoietic progenitor cells, endothelial cells and some fibroblasts. It could act as a scaffold for the attachment of lineage specific glycans, allowing stem cells to bind to lectins expressed by stromal cells or other marrow components. CD34 is highly expressed on hematopoietic progenitors, as well as on endothelial cells. CD34 has been used to measure angiogenesis, which reportedly predicts tumor recurrence.
