Description:   Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) family and is made by the placenta and cardiovascular tissues. GDF-15 regulates inflammatory and apoptotic pathways during cellular stress and injury. GDF-15 is emerging as a biomarker of early heart disease, such that increased levels of circulating GDF-15 are associated with an increased risk of developing heart failure. The GDF-15 D variant has a Histidine to an Aspartate substitution at amino acid position 7.

Description:   Mouse Cathepsin L is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase which is a member of the peptidase C1 family. This protein is a dimer composed of disulfide-linked heavy and light chains, both produced from a single protein precursor. Cathepsin L plays a major role in intracellular protein catabolism. Its substrates include collagen and elastin, as well as alpha-1 protease inhibitor, a major controlling element of neutrophil elastase activity. Cathepsin L has been implicated in several pathologic processes, including myofibril necrosis in myopathies and in myocardial ischemia, and in the renal tubular response to proteinuria.

Description:   Ephrin-A5 is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein of the ephrin-A subclass of ephrin ligands that binds to the EphA subclass of Eph receptors. Ephrin-A5 has also been shown to bind to the EphB2 receptor. It is crucial for migration, repulsion and adhesion during neuronal, vascular and epithelial development. Ephrin-A5 binds promiscuously Eph receptors residing on adjacent cells, leading to contact-dependent bidirectional signaling into neighboring cells. The signaling pathway downstream of the receptor is referred to as forward signaling while the signaling pathway downstream of the ephrin ligand is referred to as reverse signaling.

Description:   Interleukin-1 receptor type 2 (IL1R2) belongs to the interleukin-1 receptor family. Two distinct types of IL1 receptors which are able to bind IL1 specifically have been identified, designated as IL1RI (IL1RA) and IL1RII (IL1RB). IL1 receptor type II is a 68 kDa transmembrane protein found on B lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, large granular leukocytes and endothelial cells. IL1R2 is non-signalling receptor forIL1A, IL1B and IL1RN, reduces IL1B activities. IL1R2 serves as a decoy receptor by competitive binding to IL1B and preventing its binding to IL1R1. IL1R2 modulates cellular response through non-signalling association with IL1RAP after binding to IL1B. IL1R2 (membrane and secreted forms) preferentially binds IL1B and poorly IL1A and IL1RN. The secreted IL1R2 recruits secreted IL1RAP with high affinity; this complex formation may be the dominant mechanism for neutralization of IL1B by secreted/soluble receptors.

Description:   CD44 is a cell-surface receptor for hyaluronic acid and also interacts with other ligands, such as osteopontin, collagens, and matrix metalloproteinases. A large number of CD44 isoforms can be generated by the insertion of different combinations of at least nine exons. Increased CD44 antigen is associated with relapses in non-small cell lung cancers. Furthermore, an increasing quantity of evidence suggests that CD44 has various functions related to inflammatory disease. CD44 deficiency induces severe liver injury. CD44-hyaluronate mediates in lymphocyte T and monocyte adhesion to the endothelium, stimulates proinflammatory cytokine release from macrophages and participates in dedifferentiation phenotype of smooth muscle cells from contractile state to synthetic one.

Description:   Heparin-binding growth factor 1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the FGF1 gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF acidic is a potent growth factor for fibroblasts and endothelial cells. FGF acidic is involved in wound repair, angiogenesis, and development. FGF acidic is secreted from cells via an endoplasmic reticulum/Golgi independent mechanism. The ability of FGF acidic to bind to heparin sulfate is required for its ability to interact with FGF receptors and induce signaling. There are four distinct FGF receptors and each has multiple splice variants. FGF acidic binds with high affinity to many, but not all, FGFRs. Signaling cascades activated through FGF basic binding to FGFR include the ras-raf-MAPK, PLCγ/PKC, and PI3K/Akt pathways.

Description:   Stem cell factor (SCF), also known as cKit ligand (KL), mast cell growth factor (MGF), and steel factor (SLF), is a widely expressed 28-40 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein. It promotes the survival, differentiation, and mobilisaion of multiple cell types including myeloid, erythroid, megakaryocytic, lymphoid, germ cell, and melanocyte progenitors. SCF is a primary growth and activation factor for mast cells and eosinophils. Noncovalent dimers of transmembrane or soluble SCF interact with the receptor tyrosine kinase SCF R/cKit to trigger receptor dimerisaion and signalling. SCF assists in the recovery of cardiac function following myocardial infarction by increasing the number of cardiomyocytes and vascular channels.

Description:   Regenerating protein 2 (Reg2) also known as Lithostathine 2, pancreatic thread protein (PTP2) and pancreatic stone protein 2 (PSP2), is a member of the Reg family of proteins. These small, secreted proteins have been implicated in a range of physiological processes including acting as acute phase reactants, lectins, survival/growth factors for insulin-producing pancreatic beta-cells, neural cells, and epithelial cells of the digestive system. Studies also indicate a role for Reg family members in tumour formation and indicate their potential for use as biomarkers of carcinogenesis. Mouse Reg2 is expressed in regenerating islets and normal exocrine pancreas. Reg2 also stimulates the growth of pancreatic beta cells. Mouse Reg2 belongs to the type II subclass of the Reg family and is the only subclass II Reg protein described.

Description:   Platelet-Activating Factor Acetylhydrolase (PAFAH) is a secreted enzyme which belongs to the AB hydrolase superfamily and Lipase family and catalyzes the degradation of platelet-activating factor to biologically inactive products. PAFAH is produced by inflammatory cells and hydrolyzes oxidised phospholipids in LDL. PAFAH has been implicated in the development of atherosclerosis and has also been identified as a marker for cardiac disease. PAFAH might have a major physiologic effect in the presence of inflammatory bodily responses. PAFAH alters the action of PAF by hydrolyzing the sn-2 ester bond to yield the biologically inactive lyso-PAF. PAFAH has specificity for substrates with a short residue at the sn-2 position.

Description:   Programmed Death-1 (PD-1, CD279) is a type I transmembrane protein belonging to the CD28/CTLA-4 family of immunoreceptors that mediate signals for regulating immune responses. Members of the CD28/CTLA-4 family have been shown to either promote T cell activation (CD28 and ICOS) or downregulate T cell activation (CTLA-4 and PD-1). CD279 is expressed on activated T-cells, B-cells, myeloid cells and on a subset of thymocytes. In vitro, ligation of CD279 inhibits TCR-mediated T-cell proliferation and production of IL-1, IL-4, IL-10 and IFN-gamma. In addition, CD279 ligation also inhibits BCR mediated signallling. CD279 deficient mice have a defect in peripheral tolerance and spontaneously develop autoimmune diseases.
