Description:   Avian Influenza Hemagglutinin 1 Antibody: Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30, 000 people per year in the USA. Novel influenza virus strains caused by genetic drift and viral recombination emerge periodically to which humans have little or no immunity, resulting in devastating pandemics. Influenza A can exist in a variety of animals; however it is in birds that all subtypes can be found. These subtypes are classified based on the combination of the virus coat glycoproteins hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtypes. During 1997, an H5N1 avian influenza virus was determined to be the cause of death in 6 of 18 infected patients in Hong Kong. There was some evidence of human to human spread of this virus, but it is thought that the transmission efficiency was fairly low. HA interacts with cell surface proteins containing oligosaccharides with terminal sialyl residues. Virus isolated from a human infected with the H5N1 strain in 1997 could bind to oligosaccharides from human as well as avian sources, indicating its species-jumping ability.

Description:   PEN2 Antibody: PEN2, in addition to presenilin, nicastrin, and APH-1 forms the gamma-secretase protein complex, a membrane-bound aspartyl protease that can cleave certain proteins at peptide bonds buried within the hydrophobic environment of the lipid bilayer. This cleavage is responsible for a key step in signaling from several cell-surface receptors and is thought to be required for the generation of the neurotoxic amyloid peptides that are central to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Like the tumor necrosis factor-alpha-converting enzyme (TACE) and the beta-site cleavage enzyme (BACE) protease families, gamma-secretase will cleave the amyloid precursor protein (APP), but within the intramembrane region of APP, resulting in either the non-toxic p3 (from the alpha and gamma cleavage site) or the toxic Abeta amyloid peptide (from the beta and gamma cleavage site). It is thought that accumulation of the Abeta peptide is the precursor to Alzheimer's disease.

Description:   SOX2 Antibody: SOX2 is a member of the SRY-related HMG-box (SOX) family of transcription factors involved in the regulation of embryonic development and in the determination of cell fate. SOX2 is required for stem-cell maintenance in the central nervous system, and also regulates gene expression in the stomach. Mutations in this gene have been associated with optic nerve hypoplasia and with syndromic microphthalmia, a severe form of structural eye malformation. The role of SOX2 in embryonic development suggested that it might be useful in the creation of stem cells that might be useful in cell replacement therapies in the treatment of degenerative diseases. Artificial stem cells, termed induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, can be created by expressing SOX2 and the transcription factors POU5F1, Klf4 and Lin28 along with c-Myc in mouse fibroblasts. Other experiments have shown that iPS cells could be generated using expression plasmids expressing POU5F1, SOX2, KlfF4 and c-Myc, eliminating the need for virus introduction.

Description:   CALHM1 Antibody: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a massive loss of neurons in several brain regions and by the presence of senile plaques comprised of aggregated amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptides produced by the endoproteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). The calcium homeostasis modulator 1 (CALHM1) is a recently identified multipass transmembrane glycoprotein that controls cytosolic Ca2+ concentration and Abeta levels. While some studies suggest CALHM1 is significantly associated with risk of AD, other reports suggest there is no link. CALHM1 has been suggested to modulate the Ca2+-dependent proteolytic process of APP through controlling the level of cytosolic Ca2+.

Description:   BANF1 Antibody: Barrier-to-autointegration factor 1 (BANF1) is a conserved chromatin protein that non-specifically binds double-stranded DNA. BANF1 also interacts with a family of nuclear proteins that include LAP2, emerin, and MAN1. It is also a host cell component of retroviral pre-integration complexes (PICs), including that of HIV. BANF1 will bind to p55 Gag (the structural precursor of HIV-1 virions) as well as its cleaved product matrix. In addition to being a host cell component of the PIC, it is thought that BANF1 is also present at low levels in incoming virions, and thus might contribute to the assembly or activity of HIV-1 PICs through direct binding to matrix as well as DNA.

Description:   TSLP Antibody: Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) has recently been identified as an important factor capable of driving dendritic cell maturation and activation. TSLP is a four-helix-bundle cytokine that is expressed mainly by barrier epithelial cells and is a potent activator of several cell types such as myeloid dendritic cells. TSLP is involved in the positive selection of regulatory T cells, maintenance of peripheral CD4+ T cell homeostasis and the induction of CD4+ T cell-mediated allergic reaction. TSLP is also capable of supporting the growth of fetal liver and adult B cell progenitors and their differentiation to the IgM-positive stage of B cell development. Amino acid sequence analysis has shown poor homology between human and mouse TSLP although they exhibit similar biological functions and are expressed in similar tissues. At least two differentially spliced isoforms of TSLP are known to exist.

Description:   TIGAR Antibody: The p53 tumor-suppressor gene integrates numerous signals that control cell life and death; loss of its functions contributes to the development of most cancers. Recent studies have demonstrated the ability of p53 to regulate the expression of several proteins involved in glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation, such as TIGAR, SCO2, and phosphoglycerate mutase. TIGAR is a recently discovered protein that functions to regulate glycolysis and protect cells against oxidative stress. TIGAR is similar in structure to proteins in the phosphoglycerate mutase family, most notably 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase, suggesting TIGAR may function as a fructose bisphosphatase. Expression of TIGAR in transfected cells correlated with an inhibition of glycolysis and decreased levels of reactive oxygen species and p53-induced apoptosis, indicating that TIGAR may act to modulate the apoptotic response to p53, thereby allowing cells to survive mild or transient stresses.

Description:   CRTH2 Antibody: The chemoattractant receptor-homologous molecule expressed on Th2 cells (CRTH2) is a recently identified receptor for the prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in addition to the classic prostaglandin D receptor. CRTH2 is expressed on Th2 cells and eosinophils and mediates chemotaxis of these cells to PGD2 and is thus thought to be a key receptor mediating eosinophil and Th2 recruitment during allergic responses. However, CRTH2-null mice showed enhanced eosinophil recruitment into the lung consistent with observations that the CRTH2-null mice produced significantly higher amounts of interleukin-5 (IL-5) and IL-3. This suggests that CRTH2 plays a nonredundant role in restricting eosinophilia and allergic response in vivo. At least two different isoforms of CRTH2 are known to exist.
