Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic alpha-helical cytokine that plays important roles in acute phase reactions, inflammation, haematopoiesis, bone metabolism and cancer progression. IL-6 activity is essential for the transition from acute inflammation to either acquired immunity or chronic inflammatory disease. It is secreted by multiple cell types as a 22kDa-28kDa phosphorylated and variably glycosylated molecule. IL-6 induces signalling through a cell surface heterodimeric receptor complex composed of a ligand binding subunit (IL-6R) and a signal transducing subunit (gp130). IL-6 is a key factor for the growth of plasma cells.

The ST6GAL1 gene encodes beta -Galactosamide alpha-2,6-Sialyltransferase 1. It is a type II membrane protein and is localized to the trans-Golgi network. It catalyzes 2,6-sialylation of Gal beta 1,4-GlcNAc structures on N-glycans. ST6GAL1 is highly expressed in the liver and other tissues. ST6GAL1 deficiency causes abnormalities in B-cell immunoreactivity. The expression and activity of ST6GAL1 are associated with tumor metastasis in breast and colon cancers. The majority of ST6GAL1 in the liver is cleaved and secreted into the serum and may be used as a biomarker for hepatitis diseases.

Osteoactivin is an intracellular glycoprotein belongs to the NMB/pMEL-17 family, which is asscociated with cell endosomal/lysomal compartments. Human Osteoactivin is a 560 amino acid type I transmembrane protein, and one alternate splice form shows a 12 amino acid insert between amino acid 339-340. An additional 206 amino acid isoform shows a mutation at position 181 that results in a 26 amino acid substitution for the C-terminal 380 amino acids. Cells knowns to express Osteoactivin include fibroblast, osteoblasts, myeloid dendritic cell, melanocytes, plus fetal chondrocytes and stratum basale keratinocytes, macrophages/keratinocytes.

Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) is a member of the BMP subgroup of the TGF-beta superfamily. It plays a dominant role in embryonic dorsalventral patterning, organogenesis, limb bud formation and bone formation and regeneration. Butyrophilin-like 2 (BTNL2) is a butyrophilin family member with homology to the B7 costimulatory molecules, polymorphisms of which have been recently associated through genetic analysis; to sporadic inclusion body myositis and sarcoidosis. BTNL2 mRNA is highly expressed in lymphoid tissues as well as in intestine. BTNL2-Ig fusion protein was shown to recognize a putative receptor whose expression on B and T cells was significantly enhanced after activation. It inhibited T cell proliferation and TCR activation of NFAT, NF-kappaB and AP-1 signalling pathways. Carcinoembryonic Antigen-Related Cell Adhesion Molecule 8 (CEACAM8) is a single chain, GPI-anchored, highly glycosylated protein which belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and the carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) family. CEACAM8 is expressed by neutrophils and eosinophils, and serves as a binding partner for CEACAM-6 and Galectin-3. It contains two Ig-like C2-type (immunoglobulin-like) domains and one Ig-like V-type (immunoglobulin-like) domain. Mature human CEACAM8 is a 287 amino acid GPI-linked glycoprotein. CEACAM family members are a set of widely expressed proteins involved in several biological functions, including cell adhesion, migration, signal transduction, and the regulation of gene expression. Abnormal overexpression and downregulation of some CEACAMs have been described in tumor cells.
