The transmembrane and secreted protein delta-like 1 homolog (DLK1; Protein delta homolog 1; Preadipocyte factor 1; Pref-1) belongs to the EGF-like family. It can be cleaved by a tumor necrosis factor-alpha converting enzyme (TACE) to release a soluble form. DLK1 plays important roles in regulating cell differentiation such as adipogenesis and osteogenesis. Membrane-bound DLK1 promotes hypertrophic myotube formation, whereas soluble DLK1 inhibits myotube formation. The soluble form of DLK1 inhibits preadipocyte differentiation, while membrane DLK1 represses preadipocyte proliferation. DLK1 is also associated with tumor invasion.

Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule (ESAM) is a 55 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein member of the JAM family of immunoglobulin superfamily molecules. The 390 amino acid Human ESAM contains a 216 amino acid extracellular domain (ECD) with a V-type and a C2-type immunoglobulin (Ig) domain. ESAM is specifically expressed at endothelial tight junctions and on activated platelets and performs homophilic adhesion activity. The adaptor protein membrane-associated guanylate kinase MAGI-1 has been identified as an intracellular binding partner of ESAM. In addition, ESAM at endothelial tight junctions participates in the migration of neutrophils through the vessel wall, possibly by influencing endothelial cell contacts. ESAM-deficient mice were described with lowered angiogenic potential, and accordingly, overexpression of ESAM is closely associated with certain tumor growth and metastasis. ESAM is expressed on endothelial cells, activated platelets and megakaryocytes. The ECD of human and mouse ESAM share 69% amino acid identity.

β2 microglobulin is also known as Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M), is a component of MHC class I molecules which belongs to the beta-2-microglobulin family. B2M is present on all nucleated cells (excludes red blood cells). B2M associates not only with the alpha chain of MHC class I molecules, but also with class I-like molecules such as CD1 and Qa. An additional function of B2M is association with the HFE protein, together regulating the expression of hepcidin in the liver which targets the iron transporter ferroportin on the cytoplasmic membrane of enterocytes and macrophages for degradation resulting in decreased iron uptake from food and iron release from recycled red blood cells respectively. Loss of this function causes iron excess and hemochromatosis. Defects in B2M are the cause of hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia (HYCATHYP).
