Description:
Endothelial Differentiation-Related Factor 1 (EDF1) is a 148 amino acid transcriptional coactivator that contains 1 HTH cro/C1-type DNA-binding domain. It has been postulated that the protein functions as a bridging molecule that interconnects regulatory proteins and the basal transcriptional machinery, thereby modulating the transcription of genes involved in endothelial differentiation. When endothelial cells are induced to differentiate in vitro, EDF1 is downregulated, leading to inhibition of cell growth and cell polarization. EDF1 binds calmodulin thorough its IQ domain and regulates nitric oxide synthase activity through calmodulin sequestration in the cytoplasm. Though ubiquitously expressed, EDF1 is most abundant in adult liver, heart, adipose tissues, intestine and pancreas. In fetal tissues, EDF1 is most abundant in kidney. There are two isoforms of EDF1 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.
Description:
Chloride Intracellular Channel Protein 4 (CLIC4) is a 253 amino acid single-pass membrane protein that localizes to both the nucleus and the cytoplasm and contains one GST C-terminal domain. CLIC4 is expressed in various tissues and exhibits an intracellular vesicular pattern in Panc-1 cells (pancreatic cancer cells). CLIC4 acts as a monomer which is able to form selective ion channels in target proteins, thus facilitating the transport of chloride and other ions. CLIC4 is believed to have a role in apoptosis and is able to translocate to the nucleus under stress conditions. CLIC4 has alternate cellular functions like a potential role in angiogenesis or in maintaining apical-basolateral membrane polarity during mitosis and cytokinesis.
Description:
Notch signalling pathway regulates many different cell fate decisions in both vertebrate and invertebrate species. There are 5 canonical Notch ligands in mammals: Jagged-1, Jagged-2, DLL1, DLL3 and DLL4. These can bind to the four Notch receptors Notch 1-4. It is important for pattern formation during development such as neurogenesis, angiogenesis or myogenesis and regulates T cell development and stem cell maintenance. Notch signalling is also involved in cellular processes through-out adulthood. Signalling via Notch occurs between neighbouring cells and both the receptor and its ligands are transmembrane proteins.
Description:
PAX6 is one of many human homologues of the Drosophila melanogaster gene prd. In addition to the hallmark feature of this gene family, a conserved paired box domain, the encoded protein also contains a homeo box domain. Both domains are known to bind DNA,This gene encodes paired box gene 6, one of many human homologues of the Drosophila melanogaster gene prd. In addition to the hallmark feature of this gene family, a conserved paired box domain, the encoded protein also contains a homeo box domain. Both domains are known to bind DNA, and function as regulators of gene transcription. This gene is expressed in the developing nervous system, and in developing eyes. Mutations in this gene are known to cause aniridia as well as Peter's anomaly, both ocular diseases.
Description:
Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic alpha-helical cytokine that plays important roles in acute phase reactions, inflammation, haematopoiesis, bone metabolism and cancer progression. IL-6 activity is essential for the transition from acute inflammation to either acquired immunity or chronic inflammatory disease. It is secreted by multiple cell types as a 22kDa-28kDa phosphorylated and variably glycosylated molecule. IL-6 induces signalling through a cell surface heterodimeric receptor complex composed of a ligand binding subunit (IL-6R) and a signal transducing subunit (gp130). IL-6 is a key factor for the growth of plasma cells.
Description:
N-Oct-3 (POU3F2) is a protein belonging to a large family of transcription factors that bind to the octameric DNA sequence ATGCAAAT. Most of these proteins share a highly homologous region, referred to as the POU domain, which occurs in several mammalian transcription factors, including the octamer-binding proteins Oct1 (POU2F1) and Oct2 (POU2F2), and the pituitary protein Pit1 (PIT1). Class III POU genes are expressed predominantly in the CNS. It is likely that CNS-specific transcription factors such as these play an important role in mammalian neurogenesis by regulating their diverse patterns of gene expression. Description:
Interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8, interferon consensus sequence-binding protein, Ion ChannelSBP) is a transcription factor of the interferon (IFN) regulatory factor (IRF) family. Proteins of this family are composed of a conserved DNA-binding domain in the N-terminal region and a divergent C-terminal region that serves as the regulatory domain. The IRF family proteins bind to the IFN-stimulated response element (ISRE) and regulate expression of genes stimulated by type I IFNs, namely IFN-. and IFN-.. IRF family proteins also control expression of IFN-. and IFN-.-regulated genes that are induced by viral infection.
Description:
Thrombospondin Type-1 Domain-Containing Protein 1 (THSD1) is a single-pass type I membrane protein. THSD1 contains a signal peptide and one TSP type-1 domain that is found in thrombospondin. THSD1 is a good novel candidate for TSG as it has been mapped to 13q14. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been observed. THSD1 may be involved in the complement pathway.
Description:
Vitelline membrane outer layer protein 1 homolog (VMO1) belongs to the VMO1 family is a 202 amino acid secreted protein. Exact function not known, component of the outer membrane of the vitelline layer of the egg. Seems to be able to synthesize N-acetylchito-oligosaccharides (n=14-15) from hexasaccharides of N-acetylglucosamine in a manner similar to the transferase activity of lysozyme.
Description:
Secreted and transmembrane protein 1 (SECTM1) is also known as Protein K-12, which is belongs to the SECTM family, which is Inducted by IFNG/IFN-gamma (at protein level). SECTM1 is detected at the highest levels in peripheral blood leukocytes and breast cancer cell lines. SECTM1 may be involved in thymocyte signaling.
