Brain-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) is a non-glycosylated peptide that is produced predominantly by ventricular myocytes and belongs to the natriuretic peptide family. Proteolytic cleavage of the 12 kDa BNP precursor gives rise to N-terminal Pro BNP (NT-proBNP) and mature BNP. N-terminal proB-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), a useful marker of heart failure (HF), is considered to be secreted mainly from the ventricle, increased serum NT-proBNP levels are also encountered in conditions such as atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial septal defect in patients without HF.

Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a costimulatory factor for production of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in response to toxic shock and shares functional similarities with IL-12. IL-18 is synthesised as a precursor 24kDa molecule without a signal peptide and must be cleaved to produce an active molecule. IL-1 converting enzyme (ICE; Caspase-1) cleaves pro-IL-18 at aspartic acid in the P1 position, producing the mature, bioactive peptide that is readily released from the cells. It is reported that IL-18 is produced from Kupffer cells, activated macrophages, keratinocytes, intestinal epithelial cells, osteoblasts, adrenal cortex cells and murine diencephalon. IFN-gamma is produced by activated T or NK cells and plays critical roles in the defense against microbiral pathogens. IFN-gamma activates macrophages and enhances NK activity and B cell maturation, proliferation and Ig secretion. IFN-gamma also induces expression of MHC class I and II antigens and inhibits osteoclast activation. IL-18 acts on T helper type-1 (Th1) T cells and in combination with IL-12 strongly induces them to produce IFN-gamma. Pleiotropic effects of IL-18 have also been reported, such as enhancement production of IFN-gamma and GM-CSF in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, production of Th1 cytokines, IL-2, GM-CSF, IFN-gamma in T cells and enhancement of Fas ligand expression by Th1 cells.

Pterin-4- alpha-Carbinolamine Dehydratase (PCBD1) is the founding member of the Pterin-4- alpha-Carbinolamine Dehydratase Family. PCBD1 is involved in Tetrahydrobiopterin biosynthesis. It seems to prevent the formation of 7-Pterins and accelerate the formation of Quinonoid-BH2. Furthermore, PCBD1 regulates the homodimerization of the transcription factor Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 1 (HNF1) and enhances its transcriptional activity. Defects in PCBD1 are the cause of BH4-Deficient Hyperphenylalaninemia Type D (HPABH4D). HPABH4D is characterized by the excretion of 7-substituted Pterins in the urine of affected patients.

The PFDN2 protein is one of six subunits of Prefoldin that act as a molecular chaperone complex that binds and stabilizes newly synthesized polypeptides allowing them to fold correctly. Immunoglobulin alpha Fc Receptor (IgA Fc Receptor) is a member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily. It is a transmembrane glycoprotein present on the surface of myeloid lineage cells such as neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, and eosinophils, where it mediates immunologic responses to pathogens through the charged arginin residue within its transmembrane domain. IgA Fc Receptor binds both IgA1 and IgA2 with similar affinity. The site of interaction between FCAR and IgA was identified in the first extracellular domain of FCAR and the C2/C3 junction of IgA. It interacts with IgA-opsonized targets and triggers several immunologic defense processes, including phagocytosis, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity, and stimulation of the release of inflammatory mediators. FCAR is also expressed on Kupffer cells in the liver, where it was suggested to provide a second line of defense.
